Five area schools represented on All-Register Boys Basketball Team

The 2023-24 basketball season has come to a close and it’s time to announce the All-Register boys basketball teams.

The team is made up of area schools including Brookings, Sioux Valley, Deubrook Area, Elkton-Lake Benton, Arlington, Iroquois/Lake Preston, Estelline-Hendricks, Colman-Egan, Flandreau, and Oldham-Ramona Rutland.

The First Team on the boys’ side includes Sioux Valley’s Alec Squires and Maxwell Engebretson, Colman-Egan’s Jase Mousel, Deubrook Area’s Jake Jorenby and Flandreau’s Luke Sheppard. The Second Team features Sioux Valley’s Maverick Nelson and Hudsyn Ruesink, Flandreau’s Paul Parsley, Colman-Egan’s Jackson Zwart and Elkton-Lake Benton’s Tanner Drietz.

First Team
Alec Squires, Sioux Valley – Senior, Center
Squires is the Register Player of the Year after averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds this season. He also had 30 blocks on the year. This is the second straight year that Squires has made the All-Register team and he is the all-time leader in rebounds (814), blocks (152) and dunks (78) in a season. He was First Team All-State and All-Big East Conference and was All-Lake Central Conference as well this season.

Maxwell Engebretson, Sioux Valley – Senior, Guard
Engebretson averaged 16 points and six assists per game this year and helped lead the Cossacks to a 23-3 record and a consolation championship in the Class A State Tournament. Engebretson was a All-State Third Team selection and was All-Conference in both the Big East and Lake Central. Engebretson was one of the top 3-point shooters in Class A this season as he made 64 shots from beyond the arc.

Jase Mousel, Colman-Egan – Junior, Guard
Mousel averaged 22.3 points per game this season. He averaged 7.5 rebounds and two assists per game as well. He shot 43.3% from the field and was Second Team All-Dakota Valley Conference. The Hawks went 9-12 this season and lost in the Region 3B quarterfinals.

Jake Jorenby, Deubrook Area – Senior, Guard
Jorenby averaged 19 points, 7.2 rebounds and two assists per game this season. He was a First Team All-DVC selection. The Dolphins went 11-11 and lost in the Region 2B semifinals to Class B State Runner-Up De Smet.

Luke Sheppard, Flandreau – Sophomore, Guard
Sheapprd averaged 14 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game this season. He shot 52% from the field and 75% from the free throw line This is his second All-Register nod and he was a member of the All-Big East and All-LCC teams. The Fliers went 14-8 this season and fell to Sioux Valley in the Region 2A semifinals.

Second Team
Maverick Nelson, Sioux Valley – Junior, Guard
Nelson averaged 13 points, three assists and two steals per game this season. He was a member of the All-Big East and All-LCC teams. He helped lead the Cossacks to an eighth-straight Big East conference title.

Hudsyn Ruesink, Sioux Valley – Senior, Forward
Ruesink averaged 10 points and seven rebounds in his senior season. He was the MVP of the Entringer Classic in Brookings in December and had a strong postseason for the Cossacks. Ruesink was a member of the All-Big East team.

Paul Parsley, Flandreau – Junior, Guard

Parsley averaged 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game. He shot 56% from the field. This was his second All-Register selection and he was Second Team All-Big East and All-LCC this season.

Jackson Zwart, Colman-Egan – Junior, Guard
Zwart averaged 14.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists this year. He shot 43.6% from the field and was a Third Team All-DVC selection.

Tanner Drietz, Elkton-Lake Benton – Junior, Guard
Drietz averaged 13.6 points and five rebounds per game this year. He was a team captain for the Elks and started all 21 games, leading the team in scoring. Drietz was an All-DVC Honorable Mention. ELB went 7-14 this year and lost to Florence/Henry in the first round of the Region 2A Playoffs.

– Austin Clark, Brookings – 12.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 steals
– Owen Burns, Brookings – 9.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.9 steals
– Tanner Drietz, Elkton-Lake Benton – 9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1 steal
– Jack Mousel, Colman-Egan – 10.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.2 blocks
