SIOUX FALLS — Tess Burns struck out 10 batters while Morgan Norgaard and Tess Twedt each drove in runs in the top of the fifth inning to help the Brookings Bobcats win their season opener 6-5 over Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Tuesday night.

The Bobcats’ win was fueled by some early offense when Kylie Moe was hit by Desiree Hinsch with one out in the top of the first inning. After advancing to third base on a groundout by Twedt, Moe scored on Kymber Buys’s RBI single to give Brookings its first run of the season.

Brookings added to its lead in the top of the third inning when Moe got on base again with a walk and later stole home to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. The Roughriders cut into the lead with a two-run single by Rylinne DeVries to make it a 3-2 game but the Bobcats gained some separation by scoring twice in the fifth inning.

Norgaard led off the fifth with a triple and scored on an error by Avery Willis to put Brookings up 4-2. Moe drew her third walk of the game to get on base later in the inning and scored on Twedt’s RBI single to make it a 5-2 game.

Aliyah Chagolla homered in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3 but the Bobcats got the run back when Addy Bortnem scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning.

The Roughriders rallied with a two-run single by Carley Felsheim and loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning before Burns got Raelyn Sieler to ground out to Buys to end the game.

Burns finished allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks. Buys went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Norgaard went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Burns went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double while Twedt, Sydney Bebensee, Megan Wadsworth and Keisha Cushing all had singles in the win.

After winning their first game, the Bobcats will return to action when they travel to Watertown on April 9.
