TUESDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE

BROOKINGS — The residential snow-removal parking ban implemented by the city of Brookings ended at noon Tuesday.

The ban took effect at 10 p.m. Monday to allow the Public Works team, along with support from Parks, Recreation & Forestry staff and private contractors, to safely plow the streets after winter’s return.

“Together, the dedicated staff and contractors cleared all city-maintained streets and alleyways of the initial snow accumulation, including removing the snow in our downtown business district,” City Public Works Director John Thompson said in a news release.

Public Works crews will continue to monitor and clear drifting snow over the next few days, as well as sand icy streets and intersections as needed, Thompson said.

ORIGINAL STORY BELOW THIS POINT

BROOKINGS — The city of Brookings has issued a residential snow-removal parking ban that will take effect at 10 p.m. Monday, March 25. It will remain in effect until all residential streets have been plowed.

Emergency routes will continue to be cleared during this snow event. The city anticipates plowing residential streets Monday night once the intensity of the winter storm has ceased. Please note that some city streets may be impassable for low-clearance, two-wheel drive vehicles.

This ban does not include the downtown core business district, which is from Third Avenue to Fifth Avenue and from Sixth Street to the railroad tracks. However, vehicles must be removed from streets in the downtown business district between 2 and 5:30 a.m. daily or be subject to ticketing and towing, per City Ordinance Sec. 82-464. Downtown snow removal is scheduled to start at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Vehicles parked on streets during significant snowfall and high winds create a safety hazard for motorists and for city crews.

Residents should not park on city emergency routes or residential streets, avenues or alleys. The city asks that residents remove their vehicles before 10 p.m. Monday. Violators will be subject to ticketing and towing per City Ordinance 82-465.
