BROOKINGS – Women Without Limits Brookings has named the Brookings Backpack Project the recipient of its fall 2021 impact award of more than $14,000. The group held its fall 2021 membership meeting at Café Coteau in the Children’s Museum of South Dakota on Oct. 14 to vote for one of five nominated nonprofits to receive the award.

The group, led by steering committee members Nicole Biever, Alicia Henderson, Tara Mills, Ashley Ragsdale, and Amanda Te Velde, began accepting memberships in March 2021 with the initial goal of at least 100 members joining and agreeing to commit $100 donations twice a year. The group’s current membership goal is 200 members.

Members nominated 501c3 nonprofits to receive an impact award. From the nonprofit nominations, five were drawn to be considered by members. The five nonprofits, The Salvation Army of Brookings County, Junior Achievement of South Dakota, Option 1 Women’s Health Center, Project Joy, and Brookings Backpack Project, gave five-minute presentations about their organizations. Members then voted to determine the impact award recipient.

The steering committee formed the group as an opportunity to empower women to support local nonprofits. Women Without Limits does not accept or keep any of the money collected; the donations go directly to the nonprofit.

Women Without Limits Brookings is still accepting memberships and hopes to meet the next membership goal of 200 members before the next impact award is given in spring 2022.
