Whodunit in downtown Brookings?

BROOKINGS – Martha Kemm Landes lived in Brookings for five years, while her husband, Dan Landes, was on the faculty at South Dakota State University. She admits that she “fell in love with Brookings.”

And she also believes she knows the town well enough to write about it – in a whodunit mystery.

On Sept. 12, she was downtown at Kool Beans Coffee promoting and selling her book: “Framed Fur Murder.” Subtitled “A picture this mystery,” it’s billed as “a new mystery set on Brookings’ Main Street.”

The plot involves a murder in a coffee shop on Main Street (Avenue).

“It’s about a girl named Ande, who has a little photography studio on Main Street,” the author said, giving just a hint of the plot. “She takes pictures … and her favorites are pets.” Someone is poisoned in a coffee shop, and Ande becomes the main suspect.

Brookings’ thinly disguised downtown spots include: Spinner’s, Micks and several other places. “The names have been changed to protect the innocent.”

“Framed" and three other Landes mysteries can be purchased on Amazon.
