Watertown wins two against Bandits

BROOKINGS – Watertown put up 30 runs in an American Legion doubleheader sweep of Post 74 on Tuesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Post 17 won the opener in extra innings, 16-12, before running away with a 14-1 victory in the nightcap.

The Bandits, 0-3 on the young season, have a week off before traveling to Renner on Tuesday for a single game with a 6 p.m. start.

• Watertown 16, Brookings 12 (8 Innings)

Post 17 built a 9-2 lead through 3 1/2 innings before the Bandits rallied with a seven-run fourth to tie the game at 9-9 through four.

Watertown scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh to push its lead back to 12-10, but Post 74 put up two in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings, where the visitors exploded for four runs to capture the win.

Parker Schmidt led Watertown’s 15-hit attack with a single, double and triple as he drove in six runs. Brennan Gabriel also had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs as he picked up the win on the mound in relief.

Nathan Gonnelly singled and tripled and drove in a pair of runs while Blake Holden added two hits and Colton McClemans singled and had two RBIs.

Jacob Schoon finished with two doubles and two singles as he drove in three runs for Brookings. Tyler Kreutner also had four hits and an RBI as he suffered the loss in relief.

Parker Rykhus singled and tripled to drive in two runs while Christian Mediger added a double and two runs batted in. Justin Devine tacked on a pair of hits as the Bandits finished with 16 safeties.

Gabriel tossed the final two innings for Post 17, allowing just one hit while striking out two. Tucker Bayles started and gave up nine runs – five earned – on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts in three frames. Gonnelly threw three innings of middle relief and surrendered three earned runs on seven hits and a walk with three Ks.

Brock Luze started on the mound for the Bandits and gave up eight runs – two earned – on five hits with two walks over two innings.

Rykhus allowed three earned runs on five hits and a base on balls with three strikeouts in three innings before Schoon tossed one scoreless inning, walking two and striking out one.

Kreutner allowed five earned runs over the final two frames after giving up five hits.

Post 17 sent its lineup to the dish in the first inning and plated five runs to take control of the nightcap.

The visitors built their lead to 10-0 through 3 1/2 before the Bandits scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth, but Watertown tacked on four more in the fifth to end the game early via the run rule.

Brandon Florey had a big game at the plate, driving in three runs with two singles and a double while Schmidt added three base hits and an RBI.

Gabriel drove in three runs on two hits and a pair of walks as Gonnelly drove in two with a double as Watertown finished with 13 base knocks.

Tanner Shepardson had Brookings’ lone hit.

Blake Holden earned the win on the hill after giving up one earned run on one hit and two walks with eight strikeouts.

Justin Devine suffered the loss as he allowed five earned runs on three hits and three walks in an inning of work.

Rhett Zelinski gave up three earned runs on three hits and three walks with two Ks in two innings of relief before Ryan McMacken surrendered six runs – four earned – on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout.
