RAPID CITY – Sioux Falls Washington (21-13) upset second-seeded Mitchell, while defending champion and top-seeded Harrisburg (21-1), Watertown (15-7) and hometown hopeful Rapid City Stevens (29-6) also advanced at the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament on Thursday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Washington knocks off Mitchell on Day 1

RAPID CITY – Sioux Falls Washington (21-13) upset second-seeded Mitchell, while defending champion and top-seeded Harrisburg (21-1), Watertown (15-7) and hometown hopeful Rapid City Stevens (29-6) also advanced at the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament on Thursday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

 Harrisburg 3, Sioux Falls O’Gorman 1

The Tigers won 25-15, 25-18, 18-25, 25-23.

Madison Wassink totaled 16 kills, 1 1/2 blocks and an ace. Carlie Fikse added 10 kills and three blocks. Avery Thorson totaled 38 set assists and 17 digs, while Brooklyn Bollweg came up with 20 digs and Rachel Nelson added 18.

The Lady Knights (17-16) got 17 kills, three aces, 1 1/2 blocks and 14 digs from Emma Ronsiek.

 Watertown 3, Aberdeen Central 0

The Arrows took the win over the fourth-seeded Golden Eagles 25-21, 25-15 and 25-18.

McKenzie Buisker led a balanced attack with 11 kills as Abby Johnson added nine and Mariah Gloe seven.

Taylor Corey came up with 26 digs. Annie Norgerg (19) and Akexx Bayles (10) combined for 29 set assists.

For Aberdeen Central (16-6), Brooklyn Kusler had seven kills. Paiton Burckhard had five kills and 2 1/2 blocks.

 Rapid City Stevens 3, Huron 1

The Raiders bounced back from a tough first set for a 13-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-23 victory over the Tigers.

Elizabeth Schaefer had 10 kills, two aces, a solo block and 18 digs. Phebie Rossi contributed nine kills, three solo blocks and seven digs. Carley Buehner added six kills. Marlee Schneider dished out 24 set assists, while Laura Petik had 22 digs and Kyah Watson 17.

The Tigers (14-11) got 19 kills, three aces and a solo block from Hollee Niehus, while Kayla Schimke had 11 kills and three solo blocks. Havyn Heinz had 19 digs.

 Sioux Falls Washington 3, Mitchell 2

The Warriors pulled off the biggest surprise on the opening day on the tourney, knocking off the reeling Kernels (20-5) by the set scores of 25-15, 22-25, 17-25, 25-22 and 15-10.

Samiya Jami had 13 kills and three blocks (one solo). Lily Bartling totaled nine kills, three aces, 1 1/2 blocks and 20 digs.

Sydni Schetnan contributed 13 kills and a block assist.  Laura Petterson had 10 kills and a block. Phekran Kong finished with six kills and six blocks (four solo). Hailey Olson (30 and seven) and Aspen Langley (15 and nine) combined for 45 set assists and 16 digs.

The Kernels’ Mackenzie Miller ended up with 20 kills and an ace. Chelsea Brewster added 12 kills, 2 1/2 blocks (two solo) and 19 digs.
