Volga takes 13U title at Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill Classic

VOLGA – Volga went 4-0 and won the 13U division in the Cubby’s Sports Bar & Grill Classic over the weekend.

Volga beat the Watertown Grey Sox 15-7 and Sioux Falls West 8-0 on Sunday. It dropped the Watertown Grey Sox 5-3 and Harrisburg Maroon 8-4 on Saturday.

All the games were six innings.

Volga moved its record to 11-4 on the season.

Sunday

 Volga 15, Watertown Grey Sox 7

Volga put up six runs in the third inning and seven in the fourth to overcome an early 5-0 deficit.

Tysen Moe finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs.

Dawson Doyscher (double) and Layson Lucas both added two hits and a pair of RBIs.

Clark Mullaney drove in two runs and Kyler Bezdichek went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Caleb Murphy earned the win on the mound after allowing seven runs – five earned – on three hits and five walks with one strikeout in five innings.

Jake Ziegler tossed a no-hitter, striking out nine batters and walking three. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored twice.

Moe was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Jack Opitz contributed a two-run double. Lucas scored three times.

Saturday

 Volga 5, Watertown Grey Sox 3

Volga tied the game with one run in the fourth and then grabbed the lead for good with two runs in the fifth.

Lucas was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. He had a run-scoring double in the fourth.

Ziegler and Jace Christensen notched RBI singles in the fifth.

Connor Gross (two doubles) and Christensen both finished 2-for-3. Opitz walked in all three of hits plate appearances and scored twice.

Lucas pitched three hitless innings in relief to earn the win, allowing one run – unearned – with five strikeouts and four walks. Gross, the starter, surrendered two runs – one earned – on two hits with four strikeouts and a trio of walks in three innings.

Volga got off to a fast start with four runs in the first and two in the second.

Lucas went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs.

Bezdichek (double), Gross and Moe each had two hits and an RBI.

Boden Schiller gave up four runs – two earned – on three hits and eight walks with one strikeout in four innings to earn the win. Murphy picked up the save after throwing two hitless frames with two strikeouts and a walk.
