78 new COVID-19 cases, three new deaths reported in South Dakota Friday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 78 new COVID-19 cases and three new deaths in South Dakota Friday.

Two of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 4,205 total cases (two new probable): 4,109 of those people have recovered (12 new), with 59 active cases (down by 10) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 13,637 people have tested negative in Brookings County (33 new), and 154 people (one new) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There are two COVID-19 occupied hospital beds at the Brookings Hospital, the SDDOH website reported Friday.

The county is in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 123,233 (78 new – 57 confirmed plus 21 probable) as of midday Friday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 1,251 are classified as active (down by 58 from Thursday). As of Friday, 120,002 people have recovered (131 new), 7,435 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (six new), 77 people are currently hospitalized (down by 13) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,980 people have died (three new).

The SDDOH website reports 347,056 people (532 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, three men, are being reported in Brown, Minnehaha and Pennington counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 30-39 years and two in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Friday include, but are not limited to, six in Brown County, seven in Codington, three in Lincoln, 25 in Minnehaha and nine in Pennington.

The SDDOH website reported midday Friday that 612,495 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 333,447 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System.

Doses administered by Indian Health Services, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Department of Defense and Bureau of Prisons are not included in the state’s vaccine count.

In Brookings County, 23,564 vaccine doses have been administered to 13,535 people, the SDDOH website reports. As of Friday, 38.6% of the total county population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 47.9% of those 16 years and older in Brookings County have received at least one vaccine dose.

The SDDOT reports 55.5% of the state population age 16 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, and 48.9% of the state population has completed its vaccination series.
