BROOKINGS — The new T.J.Maxx store in Brookings will open its doors to the public in a grand opening celebration on March 26.

The store, which is part of the University Marketplace at 990 22nd Ave. S., clocks in at 22,000 square feet and is in the space formerly occupied by JCPenney.

“Our newest store in Brookings will offer an ever-changing selection of high-quality, on-trend and brand-name merchandise at the amazing prices T.J.Maxx is known for. Our buyers create a unique mix that offers value for styles in every department, and we’re excited to bring this experience to a new neighborhood,” T.J.Maxx President Peter Benjamin said in a news release. “With a constant flow of new arrivals, we offer an exciting one-stop-shop that makes it easy for consumers to stay on-trend with styles they love and save big every single day.”

The grand opening hours will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Regular store hours will be from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays.

“I think it’s another opportunity for Brookings residents to have a choice in shopping,” James Drew, a member of the Legacy Equity Group that has owned University Marketplace since 2016, told the Brookings Register in an August story. “A lot of our retail dollars on apparel seem to go to Sioux Falls and other parts of the region, so for Brookings to have another shopping experience, it’s just good for the community overall.”

In addition to landing the new T.J. Maxx store, recruitment efforts continue elsewhere on the property as well. “We’re working with additional retailers to fill the remaining smaller locations at the University Marketplace,” Drew said in August, noting that T.J.Maxx and Lewis Drug are the marketplace’s anchor tenants.
