Time for spring clean-up – finally!

After weather delays annual effort set

Posted

Spring clean-up is set for Monday – after being postponed three times due to winter storms, but the weather is expected to be partly sunny early next week. Neighbors on Castlewood Drive have piled their rubbish on the boulevard, but you still have time to do some spring cleaning before the city street crews come by to haul it away. All items must be on the curb by Sunday, April 29, according to the City of Brookings’ website.

This year’s pick-up is a bit later than usual, due to winter hanging on with both hands and blowing some blizzards well into April. Spring clean-up was originally set April 9 and was postponed three times due to the weather, but Monday is expected to be mostly sunny, according to the forecast, and so far, the pick-up is planned to go on as schedued.

The City of Brookings annually holds a spring cleanup for the residents, according to the city’s website. This program allows the residents to place their rubbish, debris and branches in front of their home during a designated time. This program is for anyone residing within the city limits. Commercial haulers and businesses do not have free access to dumping. The City of Brookings Street Department, Park and Forestry, Solid Waste Collection and Landfill departments work together to clean up the material set on the boulevards.

The following items will NOT be picked up from the curb:

Household refuse, place in green cart

Cardboard, place in recycling cart

Mixed piles will not be picked up

Grass/leaves, haul to the Landfill for free

Remodeling material/concrete

Paint, drop off at the paint exchange

Batteries/waste oil/chemicals/hazardous waste

The following items must be hauled to the Landfill for a fee:

Tires, fee based on size of tire

Refrigerators/freezers/AC, $12 each plus sales tax

Schedule for Curbside Pickup

SECTION 1:  Railroad tracks to 6th Street and from Main Avenue to 16th Avenue

SECTION 2:  Front Street to 6th Street and from Main Avenue to Western Avenue

SECTION 3:  6th Street to 11th Street and from Medary Avenue to Western Avenue

SECTION 4:  6th Street to 8th Street east of Medary Avenue

SECTION 6:  South of Railroad Tracks from Medary Avenue South to 22nd Avenue South

Brookings residents are encouraged to take advantage of the free dumping by hauling as much of their smaller items to the landfill as possible.  This will allow city crews to focus on faster removal of the remaining large items.

The landfill is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The last day of free dumping at the landfill will be Saturday, May 5.

Tree Branch Pickup

Please remember tree trunks and branches should not be more than 12 inches in diameter and 12 feet long. They must be placed lengthwise on the boulevard (same direction as gutter line). The City of Brookings will not enter residential property to pick them up.   If you have any questions, please call the Solid Waste Department at (605) 693-3667 or go to www.cityofbrookings.org.
