BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 32 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths in South Dakota Monday.

Three of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,369 total cases (three new probable): 3,157 of those people have recovered (30 new), with 179 active cases (down by 27) and 33 deaths (no change). A total of 10,753 people (eight new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 116 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Monday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 107,180 (32 new – 22 confirmed plus 10 probable) as of midday Monday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 3,678 are classified as active (down by 327 from Sunday). As of Monday, 101,797 people have recovered (359 new), 6,201 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (eight new), 161 people are currently hospitalized (down by one) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,705 people have died (no change).

The SDDOH website reports 290,341 people (250 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

Increases in positive cases Monday include, but are not limited to, 15 in Minnehaha County, seven in Pennington and three in Lincoln.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (26,775), Pennington (12,248), Lincoln (7,369), Brown (4,846) and Codington (3,713).

The SDDOH website reported midday Sunday that 77,350 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 59,129 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 2,012 vaccine doses have been administered to 1,646 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
