Team South Dakota finishes 2nd

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Team South Dakota finished as runner-up in the USA Hockey Youth 16U Tier II 1A National Tournament.

Brookings’ Kade Brecher was on the squad.

Monday – Championship

 Atlanta Fire 4, Team SD 3, OT

Tyler Stewart scored the game-winner 47 seconds into the extra period.

Team SD led 2-1 after a period but trailed 3-2 early in the third. Camden Pinto netted the equalizer with 12:16 remaining in regulation.

Brecher stopped 19 shots.

Sunday – Semifinals

 Team SD 4, CDA (Idaho) 3

Team South Dakota built a 4-0 lead early in the second period and then held on.

Four different players lit the lamp.

Brecher made 25 saves.

Pool Play

Saturday

 Team SD 11, Delaware Ducks 1

Cory Perdaems netted a hat trick and added an assist, while Anthony Valland (two assists) and Max Evans contributed two goals apiece.

Brecher earned the win between the pipes.

Friday

 Team SD 4, Atlanta Fire 1

Dawson Wirth had two goals and an assist.

Cole Langston was the winning goalie.

Thursday

 Team SD 9, Park City Miners (Utah) 4

Nine different players scored in the win.

Langston earned the win in goal.

14U TIER II 2A

DALLAS – Team South Dakota fell 6-2 to the Alaska Stars in the quarterfinals of the USA Hockey Youth 14U Tier II 2A National Tournament.

They went 3-0 in pool play.

The squad included Brookings players Cooper Deatherage, Luke Honkomp and Ren Jacobsen.

In pool play, Team SD beat the Ashburn Xtreme (Va.) 6-1 on Saturday, the Jr. Coyotes (Ariz.) 7-2 on Friday and the Nashville Flyers 7-2 on Thursday.

Jacobsen scored a goal in Thursday’s and Friday’s contests, while Honkomp also scored against the Flyers. Deatherage had two assists in pool play action.

GIRLS 19U TIER II 1A

DENVER – Team South Dakota finished 1-2 in the USA Hockey Girls 19U Tier II 1A National Tournament.

Brookings’ Kiran Vugteveen and Jadyn Runge were on the squad.

Team SD opened pool play with a 5-4 defeat of the San Diego Angels on Friday. Vugteveen scored a goal.

They fell 6-1 to the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers on Saturday, with Vugteveen netting the lone goal. They lost 6-4 to the Florida Alliance on Sunday.

GIRLS 16U TIER II 1A

DENVER – Team South Dakota posted a 4-1 record in the USA Hockey Girls 16U Tier II 1A National Tournament, falling in the semifinals.

Savannah Barber and Taylor Hokenson represented Brookings on the squad.

Team SD fell 3-2 in overtime to the Philadelphia Little Flyers in the semifinals after beating the Anchorage North Stars 4-2 in the quarterfinals earlier Sunday.

In pool play, Team SD beat the RM Lady Roughriders (Colo.) 2-1 in a shootout Saturday, the New Jersey Colonials 7-0 Friday and the Central NY Bobcats 4-1 on Thursday.

Barber had two goals and an assist versus the Colonials.
