Strong pitching leads Renner 14U to sweep of Bombers

RENNER – Renner 14U Black swept the Bombers Black by the scores of 2-0 and 1-0 in a youth baseball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

Brookings (15-11) plays host to Marshall, Minn., in a twinbill Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mickelson Field.

Game 1

• Renner 2, Brookings 0

Reece Arbogast struck out 14 batters and walked five in six hitless innings on the mound for the Barons.

Harry Hueners worked a perfect seventh to complete the no-hitter and earn the save.

Renner scored both its runs in the bottom of the second.

Ethan Fredrickson reached on an error with one out and advanced to second, before moving to third on a passed ball.

Joe Lynch came through with an RBI single to get the Barons on the board. Ben Renshaw walked and Zach Ridl reached on an error to load the bases.

Andy Moen hit into a fielder’s choice, which allowed Lynch to score to make it 2-0.

Ridl and Andrew Barr had Renner’s other hits.

Mason Bebensee was the tough-luck loser for the Bombers Black, surrendering just two runs – none earned – on three hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts in six innings.

Game 2

Renshaw and Aspen Dahl combined on a one-hitter as the Barons completed the sweep with another solid pitching performance.

Renshaw allowed one hit and five walks with a strikeout in five innings of action. Dahl retired all six batters he faced, including one by strikeout, to notch the save.

In the first frame, Moen walked with one out, stole second and scored on Barr’s two-out hit.

Barr and Ridl both finished 2-for-3 with a double. Dalton Garbers also doubled and Jaden Feterl singled.

Brookings’ Jamison Honkomp singled. Jackson Krogman walked twice.

Max Struck took the loss despite allowing only one run on six hits and a walk over six innings.
