State track meets start Friday in Brandon, Sioux Falls and Tea

Local track and field fans will have plenty to cheer about this weekend as dozens of area athletes will be competing this weekend in the 2017 SDHSAA State Track and Field Meet in Brandon, Tea and Sioux Falls.

The Class AA State Meet starts at 10 a.m. on Friday at Brandon Valley High School and then moves to Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls on Saturday for the final day.

The Class A State Meet is at Tea Area High School on Friday – starting at 9:30 a.m. – and also switches to Howard Wood on Saturday.

Class B is at Howard Wood both days – kicking off at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.

Saturday’s action at Howard Wood starts at 9 a.m. with the girls’ 100-meter hurdles finals, with the last events – the 4x400-meter relays – scheduled to start at 2:35 p.m.

Class AA

BROOKINGS

Brookings will be represented by 38 athletes – 16 boys and 22 girls.

GIRLS

Individually for the Bobcat girls, Ellie Abraham’s time of 5 minutes, 4.8 seconds is tops in the 1,600 field, while her 2:13.60 in the 800 is the second-best mark of the season.

Amanda Schulte qualified for the shot with a put of 40 feet, 11 1/2 inches – third-best coming in – and will also compete in the discus, along with Ashley Anderson. Schulte’s top throw of 117-2 is eighth in the field while Anderson sits in 16th with her throw of 109-3.

Sydney Maher’s time of 12.3 seconds in the 100 dash is tied for eighth overall.

Kailee Bartels, Ellie Hegdahl and Grace Eggebrecht all qualified for the 100 hurdles.

Bartels’ time of 15.3 seconds is tied for seventh in the field; Hegdahl’s 16.0 is 15th; while Eggebrecht’s 16.2 is tied for 18th.

Bartels will also compete in the triple jump. Her mark of 34-1 is tied for 21st coming into the meet while Clarissa Miller ranks 20th with a 34-4.

Eggebrecht also qualified in the open 200. Her time of 27.0 is ranked 15th in the field.

Hegdahl will also run the 300 hurdles, along with Amanda Kees. Hegdahl’s 47.9 ranks in a 13th-place tie while Kees’ time of 48.7 is tied for 17th.

The ‘Cats will compete in all five relays – the 4x100 (50.7); the 4x200 (1:47.7); the 4x400 (4:05.10); the 4x800 (10:29.4); and the sprint medley (4:11.20). Brookings is seeded second in the sprint medley – just 2.2 seconds off Brandon Valley’s pace – and sixth in the 4x400.

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Bastienne Baggett, Josie Bono, Megan Gilk, Madison Gray, Abby Mathiason, Alexis McGuire, Ainsley Powers, Emily Rystrom, Jacalyn Sebern, Tatum Sheridan, Baylee Tetzlaff, Brooke Wika and Miranda Ysbrand.

BOYS

Individually for the Bobcat boys, Reece Weber qualified in the 200 and 400 dashes. His 200 time of 23.6 seconds is tied for 17th, while his 400 mark of 52.1 is 10th overall.

Isaac Conrad clocked a 2:04.3 in the 800, which puts him 14th coming into the state meet, while Oscar Kavanagh sits in the 20th position with a time of 4:41.5 in the 1,600.

Devin Coughlin’s mark of 41-11 1/4 ranks eighth in the triple jump, while Dillon Jensen’s throw of 147-5 in the discus is ninth overall.

Eddie Miller’s put of 47-9 ranks him 11th in the shot and his throw of 142-9 in the discus is 14th as Seth Swedlund’s clearance of 6-1 puts him in an 11th-place tie in the high jump.

The ‘Cats will compete in all five relays – the 4x100 (47.0); the 4x200 (1:38.6); the 4x400 (3:37.8); the 4x800 (8:36.9); and the sprint medley (4:13.40). Brookings is seeded ninth in the 4x800.

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Carson Cody, Jordan Cournoyer, Carter Eidem, Greg Opdahl, Casey Pedersen, Nick Rudnik, Isaac von Fischer, Chuck Wang and Jay Wilber.

Class A

FLANDREAU

Flandreau will be represented by 10 athletes – eight girls and two boys.

GIRLS

Individually for the Flyer girls, Ashtyn Bertram qualified for the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.20 seconds, which seeds her 20th.

Madeline Hursey ran a 5:39 1,600 meter that is the 15th-best time, while her 3,200 run qualifies at 12:38.60, 16th overall.

Elle Thompson’s discus throw of 110-6 sets her at 16th.

The Flyers will compete in two relays – the 4x100 (53.0) and sprint medley (4:27.7).

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Kylie Bertram, Elizabeth Hursey, Cassidy Keith, Hannah Parsley and Isabella Pavlis.

BOYS

Individually for the Flyer boys, Dalyn Bakkedahl, with a mark of 40-11 1/4 in the triple jump ranks 14th.

Luke Behrens ran a 53.90 in the 400 that has him 17th coming into state.

SIOUX VALLEY

Sioux Valley will be represented by 16 athletes – nine boys and seven girls.

GIRLS

Individually for the Cossack girls, Nikole Ziegler qualified for three events. Her high jump of 5-2 is tied for first; her 100 hurdle time of 16.9 is ranked 14th and her long jump mark of 15-6 puts her 20th.

Lynsey Stevens will compete in all of the jumping events. She’s tied for second right behind Ziegler in the high jump at 5-1. Her long jump of 16-3 3/4 places her seventh and her mark of 34-10 1/2 in the triple jump sets her at fifth.

Cheyanne Kamps qualified with a time of 27.4 that is 14th in the 200.

Rachel Miller’s 100 time of 13.1 spots her 15th.

The Cossacks will compete in one relay – the 4x200 (1:54.1) – currently 14th ranked.

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Caley Gruntmeir, Reagan Johnson and Baylea Lucas.

BOYS

Individually for the Cossack boys, Cole Gross’ time of 23.8 in the 200 ranks him 23rd.

Nick Strasburg’s put of 45-8 1/2 in the shot ranks him 14th, and he will also compete in the triple jump with the 20th-best mark of 40-2.

Also putting the shot is Silas Larsen, whose mark of 42-3 1/4 is ranked 18th.

Brennan Stoltenberg’s throw of 114-2 in discus ranks him 19th.

Max Nielson’s time of 10:55.6 in the 3,200 puts him 23rd overall while Tyge Schiller qualified in the 100 with a time of 11.5.

The Cossacks will compete in three relays – the 4x100 (46.2); 4x200 (1:34.1); and the sprint medley (3:58.0).

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Daymein Lucas, Noah Puetz and Tayt Vincent.

Class B

ARLINGTON

Arlington will be represented by 16 athletes – seven girls and nine boys

GIRLS

Individually for the Cardinal girls, Brylee Hennrich qualified in two events, the 800 in 2:28 (ranked fifth); while her 400 time of 1:01.9 ranks 10th.

Jayna Haufschild ranks 13th in pole vault with a mark of 8-0.

The Cardinals will compete in one relay – the 13th-seeded sprint medley (4:33.6).

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Jeryn Christensen, Madysn Gilbertson, Tanley Goebel, Tessa Nelson and Kasey Pistulka.

BOYS

The Cardinals will have one athlete from Arlington go to state. Logan Brandriet qualified with a pole vault mark of 8-6, which is ranked 18th.

COLMAN-EGAN

The Colman-Egan Hawks will be represented by 13 athletes – four girls and nine boys.

GIRLS

Individually for the Hawks, Olivia Baumberger is ranked fifth in long jump with a mark of 16-5 1/4 and ninth in the 100 with a 12.9.

Sami Lebert and Haleigh Nicol qualified for the triple jump. Nicol’s mark of 32-8 1/2 is 15th; Lebert’s 32 1/2 is 25th.

Elizabeth Moore qualified 30th in high jump with a mark of 4-10.

BOYS

Individually for the Hawks, Olivier Walker ranks in the top two in each of his races. A time of 14.7 tops the 110 hurdles field; his 22.5 in the 200 is second best, along with his 300 hurdles time of 40 flat.

Kade Groos’ 400 time of 50.8 is third best, while Cole Kriech time of 51.9 is eighth best.

Malik Poppenga’s distance of 19-10 3/4 will rank him at 21st in the long jump and his mark of 40-11 1/2 puts him at ninth best in triple jump.

The Hawks qualified four relay teams – the 4x100 (44.5); 4x200 (1:33.2); 4x400 (3:28.8); and sprint medley (3:41.70). Colman-Egan is seeded in the top four of each event, which includes first in the 4x400 and second in the sprint medley.

DEUBROOK AREA

The Deubrook Area Dolphins will be represented by 14 athletes – 11 girls and three boys.  

GIRLS

Individually for the Dolphin girls, Cortney Bauman and Shaylee DeBeer qualified for the 800. Debeer is tied for the fifth seed (2:28) and Bauman is seeded eighth (2:28.7).

Bauman’s 300 hurdle time of 48.0 ranks third.

In the triple jump, DeBeer and Ashley Vandermeer rank one and two, respectively, with marks of 36-0 1/4 and 35-8.

Vandermeer is also ranked fourth in the long jump with a leap of 16-6 1/2. Joining her in the event is Sarah Urevig, whose mark of 14-9 is ranked 27th.

Josie Olsen and Andrea Vandermeer will compete in both the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. Olsen is seeded third at 5:28.2, while Vandermeer’s 5:39.4 is ranked seventh in the 1,600. In the 3,200, Olsen sits second at 11:52.6 and Vandermeer is 10th at 12:23.6.

The Dolphins qualified in four relays – the 4x200 (1:49); 4x400 (4:11.40); 4x800 (10:01.40); sprint relay (4:21). Deubrook Area is ranked first in the 4x400 and 4x800, and second in the both the sprint medley – only 1.1 seconds behind Viborg-Hurley – 4x200 – just two seconds behind Chester Area.  

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Baylee Holmlund, Abbie Hulsebus, Carley Landmark, Trixie Jo Schlechter and Emma Vandermeer.

BOYS

Individually for the Dolphin boys, Ryan Berndt qualified 19th in long jump at 19-11 and 14th in triple jump at 40-3.

Aczel Garcia is ranked 13 in the 400 with a time of 55.9, while Jacob Johnson is seeded 17th in the 110 hurdles (17.1).

ELKTON-LAKE BENTON

Elkton-Lake Benton will be represented by 15 athletes – eight girls and seven boys.

GIRLS

Individually for the Lady Elks, Samantha Schindler qualified in the pole vault with a mark of 7–6, while Karlie Christensen cleared 7 feet.

ELB also qualified one relay team – the 4x800 (11:33), which is seeded 21st.  

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relay include: Taylor Baies, Julia Drietz, Karissa Olson, Callie Otkin, Marie Robbins and Portia Weishaar.

BOYS

Individually for the Elks, Hunter Nielsen sits 13th in pole vault at 11-6 and Miles Harming turned in a time of 11:10.36 in the 3,200, ranking him 15th.

The Elks will compete in the 4x800 (9:23.20).

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Cole DeRuyter, Grant DeRuyter, Aiden Erickson, Marcus Harming and Devon Sopko.

ESTELLINE

Three female athletes will represent the Estelline.

Christine Nefzger qualified in the pole vault and is seeded 11th with a mark of 8-3, while Alexis Vomacka cleared 6-0 to qualify for state.

Tiffany Vohlken is seeded 22nd in the discus (99-0).

LAKE PRESTON

The Lake Preston Divers will be represented by nine athletes – three boys and six girls.

GIRLS

Individually for the Divers, Rylie Brown is tied for the third seed with a time of 12.5 in the 100 and tied for the second seed in the 200 with a time of 25.9.

Ashlyn DeKnikker sits 14th with a time of 5:54.1 in the 1,600 while Karley DeKnikker is 11th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.2. Karley also will compete in the 300 hurdles, with her 48.9 seeding her seventh.

The Divers will compete in three relays – the 4x100 (53.6); 4x200 (1:51.7); and sprint medley (4:29.4). In the medley, the Divers are ranked fifth.

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Lexis Curry, Lindsay Hillestad and Ashley Neeley.

BOYS

Individually the Divers, Brock Bumann qualified for the 110 hurdles with a 16.1, seeded 10th. His time of 42.8 in the 300 hurdles is the seventh seed.

Stetson Eschenbaum is ranked 21st with a time of 23.5 in the 200 and Rhett McMasters is ranked 19th in the 3,200 with a time of 11:14.7.

OLDHAM-RAMONA/RUTLAND

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland qualified eight male athletes to the state meet.

Bennet Trygstad put the shot 48-4 1/2 for a sixth seed and qualified 11th in the discus with a throw of 145 feet.

Riston Wolf also qualified for the shot put with a ninth-seeded mark of 46-9 1/2.

The Raiders will compete in one relay – 4x800 (9:18.1).

In addition to the athletes named above, other runners that will compete in the relays include: Daniel Jaton, Robie Malisch, Jack Olson, Casey Renaas, Peyton Roti and Connor Spilde.
