South Dakota State softball wins Summit League regular-season title

BROOKINGS – The Jackrabbits took three out of four from the Coyotes to clinch the Summit League softball regular-season title over the weekend.

South Dakota State won 9-1 in six innings to open Sunday’s doubleheader to seal the championship and followed with a 10-2, five-inning triumph.

On Saturday, USD snapped SDSU’s school-record 16-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory in Game 1. It marked SDSU’s first conference loss of the season. The Jackrabbits bounced back with a 10-0, five-inning triumph in Game 2.

South Dakota State (32-5, 17-1) hosts Creighton in a nonconference doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m.

The Jackrabbits then close out the regular season hosting second-place North Dakota State (13-23, 8-7) in noon doubleheaders April 7-8.

USD dropped to 12-33 (7-9).

Note: SDSU hit the 30-win mark for the sixth time in program history, including the third time under head coach Krista Wood. The Jackrabbits went 37-18 in 2018 and 37-19 in 2019. They were 15-8 in 2020 before the season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sunday

Game 1

 SDSU 9, USD 1 (6 inn.)

The bottom third of the Jackrabbit lineup combined for seven hits and six RBIs, and Grace Glanzer tossed a three-hitter.

No. 8 hitter Cheyanne Masterson was 2-for-2 with a homer, a walk and four RBIs.

No. 9 Rozelyn Carrillo finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

No. 7 Jocelyn Carrillo ended up 2-for-3 and scored twice.

The Coyotes’ lone run was unearned, as Glanzer struck out five and walked a pair.

Masterson belted a three-run bomb in the second. Rozelyn Carrillo followed with a solo shot to make it 4-0.

Masterson (single) and Rozelyn Carrillo (double) tacked on RBI hits in the fourth, leaving the score at 6-1.

The Jackrabbits tacked on a three-spot in the sixth to end the game early.

Allison Beaudry and Cylie Halvorson logged RBI singles. The former scored on an error on Kelsey Lenox’s batted ball to seal the deal.

SDSU totaled 12 hits.

Game 2

 SDSU 10, USD 2 (5 inn.)

Six of the Jackrabbits’ 13 hits went for extra bases.

Peyton Daugherty went 3-for-4 with a double.

Cylie Halvorson was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

Rozelyn Carrillo (double, two RBIs) and Kelsey Lenox (RBI) both ended up 2-for-3.

Cheyanne Masterson totaled three RBIs, including a two-run homer that pulled SDSU even in the bottom of the second.

The Jacks took control with five runs in the fourth.

Carrillo had an RBI double and Halvorson followed with a two-run double. Lenox’s run-scoring hit made it 7-2.

In the fifth, Masterson pushed her RBI total to three with a sacrifice fly, plating Jocelyn Carrillo.

Rozelyn Carrillo and Halvorson notched RBI singles to end it.

Tori Kniesche (17-1) allowed two runs – one earned – on three hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk in another complete-game performance.

Lindsey Culver doubled and scored three times. Jocelyn Carrillo also doubled.

Saturday

Game 1

 USD 3, SDSU 1

Gill Woodward took a two-hit shutout into the seventh as the Coyotes held off the Jackrabbits.

She allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk.

Lauren Wobken had a two-run triple in the third. Courtney Wilson, who earlier tripled, logged a run-scoring double in the seventh to make it 3-0.

Cylie Halvorson led off the bottom of the seventh with a homer.

Kelsey Lenox followed with a hit and Jocelyn Carrillo notched a two-out single. Cheyanne Masterson flew out to the warning track in center field for the final out.

Lenox finished 2-for-3 with a double.

Grace Glanzer gave up three runs – two earned – on eight hits with three strikeouts in a complete-game performance.

Game 2

 SDSU 10, USD 0 (5 inn.)

Tori Kniesche tossed a no-hitter and the Jackrabbits exploded for nine runs in the second inning.

She struck out 11 and walked one – the lone Coyote baserunner – while improving to 16-1 on the season.

Jocelyn Carrillo went 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs.

The Jackrabbits sent 12 batters to the plate in the big frame.

Jocelyn Carrillo recorded a run-scoring single to get it going. Rozelyn Carrillo had a two-run double and later scored on an error.

Kelsey Lenox stroked an RBI double, Allison Yoder and RBI triple and Lindsey Culver an RBI single. The latter two finished the game 2-for-3.

Jocelyn Carrillo followed with a two-run homer to make it 9-0.

In the fourth, Yoder stole home as Jocelyn Carrillo swiped second to provide for the final margin.

Note: It marked SDSU’s second no-hitter of the season.
