VOLGA – Sisseton sophomore Courtney Heath claimed medalist honors and Madison won the team title at the Region 1A Girls’ Golf Tournament on a miserably windy Thursday at Meadow Creek.
Heath fired 42 on her first nine and 46 on her second for an 88 and a one-stroke victory over Madison’s Mya Maxwell, who shot 89 (46-43).
The Lady Bulldogs posted a team score of 377 to edge the second-place Redmen (381).
McCook Central/Montrose earned the third automatic bid to the state tournament, taking third at 423 – just ahead of fourth-place Aberdeen Roncalli (427) and fifth-place Milbank Area (431). Milbank, however, qualified four individuals for state and will factor into the team standings at the season-ending event.
Dell Rapids (433) was sixth and host Sioux Valley (488) seventh.
The Quarriers’ Kaitlyn Greenhoff placed third with a 92 (44-48) and Madison’s Emily Knuths was fourth at 93 (47-46).
The Fighting Cougars’ Taylor Reif (49-45) and Kayla Mentele (50-44) and Sisseton’s Jacinda Carlson (49-45) tied for fifth with matching 94s.
Tying for eighth at 95 were the Cavaliers’ Christian Berbos (49-46), the Redmen’s Kelsey Heath (45-50) and Madison’s Kelsey Gustaf (48-47).
Lizzy Ellingson completed Madison’s team tally with a 100 (51-49), putting her in 11th. Rounding out Sisseton’s team score, Kierra Silk shot 104 (53-51) and tied for 13th.
The top 23 individuals qualified for the state tourney.
Cossack freshman Rachel Cotton made the cut for the second consecutive season, shooting 114 to tie for 22nd.
Montana Anderson shot 121, Ellie Schmidt 125 and Madisyn Christensen 128 to round out Sioux Valley’s team score. Perri Liedtke added a 137.
The Class A State Girls’ Golf Tournament is June 5-6 at Central Valley in Hartford.
