Showing love for Brookings

May 1 is a day ‘to band together’

BROOKINGS – Dress in Brookings apparel; decorate windows on businesses, cars and homes; and band together.

That’s the message manager Jami Smith and the crew of Allegra in downtown Brookings are working to get out in the organization and promotion of “We Love Brookings Day,” scheduled for Friday, May 1.

“We want to band together as a community and show our love for Brookings,” she said. “We are asking residents and business owners to decorate windows on their businesses, cars and homes that show a message of love for Brookings along with wearing Brookings apparel.

“Once they have done that, we are asking them to take photos and upload their photos to our Allegra social media sites, like Facebook (Allegra of Brookings) and lnstagram. We can then share them with the community. People can go in and look at those pages.” When participants post, they’re asked to use the hashtag #welovebrookingsday.

Smith said she’s working on some sort of prizes. It might be the best decorated business or the best decorated home.

“Hopefully if we get enough people and businesses in the community, maybe people can get in their cars to go for a ride or go for a walk,” she added.

Smith also noted that if shut-downs and social distancing are still in effect on May 1 and most people are indoors, “This wouldn’t in any way affect that. No, not at all, and that is why we are going online with photos and such.

“lf people don’t want to leave their homes, they can still participate by taking photos of what they decorated or their apparel or something like that and they can look and see what somebody else is doing, too.”

Smith is hoping her brainstorm will be one grand gala day of celebration during these days of the coronavirus.

“We just like to think about how everybody has come together, and we want to celebrate that. I was just thinking about all the things that Brookings is offering. Right now, they have ‘hearts’ and cruising Main. It is really great that even though we have to stay apart, we have come together. Brookings is always just good about getting things done, and I think we have done a great job. We are a great community.”
