BROOKINGS – A shoplifting suspect was injured Saturday afternoon after she crashed her bike into a building as she was trying to flee the scene, according to Brookings Police.

Alcohol was a factor in both the alleged theft and the subsequent accident, police reports say.

Police and ambulance responded to the Walmart parking lot shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday for a report of a bicyclist with an injury, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

Prior to the accident, the suspect, a 31-year-old Brookings woman, was observed shoplifting beer from the store, Powers said.

“When an employee contacted her about it, she dropped the beer and attempted to flee. When she attempted to flee on her bike, she hit the building,” Powers said.

Powers said the woman had been drinking.

Brookings Ambulance transported her to emergency room, where she was treated and released. She was cited for second-degree petty theft, Powers said.
