BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 11 new COVID-19 deaths and 116 new cases in South Dakota Monday.

Seven of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,306 total cases (four new confirmed and three new probable): 3,031 of those people have recovered (six new), with 243 active cases (up by one) and 32 deaths (no change). A total of 10,585 people (13 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 114 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Monday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 105,659 (116 new – 92 confirmed plus 24 probable) as of midday Monday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 4,613 are classified as active (down by 49 from Sunday). As of Monday, 99,379 people have recovered (153 new), 6,082 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (19 new), 203 people are currently hospitalized (down by 10) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,667 people have died (11 new).

The SDDOH website reports 286,205 people (327 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, two women and nine men, are being reported in Dewey, Hanson, Lyman, Oglala Lakota, Pennington (3), Roberts (2) and Union (2) counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 50-59 years, four 60-69 years, four 70-79 years and two in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Monday included, but are not limited to, nine in Lincoln County, 26 in Minnehaha and 14 in Pennington.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (26,425), Pennington (12,057), Lincoln (7,240), Brown (4,773) and Codington (3,673).

The SDDOH website reported midday Monday that 57,121 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 47,292 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 1,551 vaccine doses have been administered to 1,333 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
