BROOKINGS – Sarah Lippert, Brookings volunteer connections coordinator for the Helpline Center, recently announced the following opportunities for area residents to become more involved in the community through volunteering.
Brookings Salvation Army, Spring clean-up Share the Warmth donation drive
Salvation Army’s Share the Warmth Project is holding a Spring Clean-Up Donation Drive on Wednesday, April 10, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Faith Reformed Church. Volunteers are needed to help receive donations, as well as count and organize donated items of winter apparel.
American Cancer Society, Relay for Life
Relay for Life will be held March 29 at the Union at SDSU. Volunteers are needing in the following areas:
• Community committee members. Since it is a joint event, we are looking for representation from both the community and SDSU.
• Volunteers to help with set up and tear down on Friday.
• Volunteers to help with publicity such as hanging posters around town.
• Volunteers to help with gathering donations for the silent auction.
Set-up on Friday, March 29, will begin around noon. The event begins at 5 p.m. and will wrap up around 11 p.m.
Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership, income tax volunteer
ICAP’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is seeking volunteers to assist clients with filing tax returns. Volunteers for Brookings County who are willing to assist individuals with filing their tax returns. Volunteers will be required to attend training and be certified. VITA offers eligible tax filers in Lake, Moody, Miner, Hamlin, Kingsbury, Clark, Lincoln, Turner, Codington, McCook, Grant, Minnehaha, Brookings and Deuel counties the opportunity to meet with volunteers trained by the IRS to process their returns. Eligibility is based on a household income of less than $56,000. All assistance provided is confidential, free and each participant receives copies of their return for record-keeping purposes.
Boys and Girls Club of Brookings, Willie Mac Basketball Tournament
The Boys & Girls Club is in need of 250-plus volunteers for our annual Willie Mac basketball tournament on March 22-24. There are jobs for basketball fans and non-basketball fans alike.
