SDSU’s Cal Lawton wins 800-meter run at Arkansas Spring Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Cal Lawton won the 800-meter title and solid performances were plentiful as the South Dakota State track and field program battled the elements to open the outdoor track and field season at the Arkansas Spring Invitational.

The Jackrabbits found success in the men's and women's 800-meter runs.

Lawton won the men's race, posting a time of 1 minute, 53.92 seconds. Krista Steele finished second in the women's race, posting a personal-best time of 2:13.15, which puts her into ninth place on South Dakota State's all-time top-10 list.

In his first collegiate competition, Dakota Leonhard finished second in the javelin throw with a distance of 186 feet, 11 inches, a mark that ranks fourth on the all-time top-10 list.

Two Jacks claimed runner-up finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

On the men's side, Micah Mather posted a time of 9:38.56 to place second and Chandler Klawitter took fifth with a time of 9:43.65. Halie Mechels finished in 11:02.35 for second place in the women's race.

In the men's 3000-meter run, Chase Cayo (8:30.01) finished third and Lukas Nelson (8:31.01) took fourth. On the women's side, Emily Berzonsky finished in 10:10.53.

Jake Lieberg finished with a time of 54.24 in the 400-meter hurdles for sixth place. Tom Bates (56.44) finished in 12th place followed by Peter Bates (57.78) in 13th.

In the 400-meter dash, Savannah Dolezal posted an outdoor personal-best time of 56.91. Jacleen Patterson finished the race in 57.51 followed by Oksana Covey with a time of 58.61.

Sam Zenner finished 10th in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 10.87.

In the women's discus throw, Kasie Vollmer claimed fourth place with a throw of 141-5. Silvia Zanini took sixth in the event, throwing a distance of 136-3.

Logan Ammons threw a distance of 172-3 in the hammer throw to finish fourth in the event.

Up Next

The Jacks will travel to Texas for two meets March 29-April 1. Some of the team will compete at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, while the remainder will compete at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas.
