SDSU wins regional opener, eliminated on Day 2

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – South Dakota State won its opener 7-1 over Stanford on Friday but fell 4-0 to No. 6 seed Arkansas and saw its standout season end with a 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Cardinal on Saturday in the NCAA Softball Tournament Fayetteville (Ark.) Regional at Bogle Park.

The Jackrabbits were appearing in their first NCAA tourney.

They finished with a 43-8 record, tying the program record for wins in a season (43-22 in 1996).

Among the other school records broken, SDSU hit 73 home runs – 20 more than the previous mark set in 2016.

Saturday marked the only time SDSU suffered back-to-back losses this season.

Saturday

 Stanford 2, SDSU 1 (10 inn.)

The Cardinal pushed across a run in the 10th to topple the Jackrabbits in a rematch of the opening-round game.

Kristina Inouye drew a leadoff walk. Taylor Gindlesperger walked with two away.

Eleni Spiakis singled up the middle after that, plating pinch-runner Sydney Steele to make it 2-1.

SDSU’s Cylie Halvorson drilled a two-out double in the bottom of the inning; however, a groundout ended it.

Jocelyn Carrillo drove in Emma Osmundson with a single in the bottom of the third to get things going.

In the fourth, Gindlesperger singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a sacrifice bunt and sprinted home on another wild pitch to tie it.

Alana Vawter (22-10) allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks.

Jackrabbit starter Tori Kniesche (21-2) surrendered two runs on just three hits with eight Ks and four walks.

Rozelyn Carrillo (double), Peyton Daugherty and Lindsey Culver added hits.

Notes: Halvorson broke the SDSU school records of home runs (19) and total bases (127). … Jocelyn Carrillo has reached base safely in 22 consecutive games. She slugged a school-record .813 on the year.

 No. 6 Arkansas 4, SDSU 0

Mary Haff and Autumn Storms combined for the shutout in the circle.

Haff (25-6) gave up four hits with seven strikeouts and a walk in six innings. Storms worked the seventh, surrendering three consecutive two-out hits – by Cheyanne Masterson, Rozelyn Carrillo and Peyton Daugherty – but ended it with a strikeout.

Linnie Malkin hit a two-run homer in the second inning.

In the fourth, Kayla Green plated Danielle Gibson with a double and later scored on Aly Manzo’s single.

Grace Glanzer (19-5) allowed four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in her 22nd complete game of the season.

Daugherty, the leadoff hitter, finished 3-for-4 with a double. Cylie Halvorson and Jocelyn Carrillo added hits.

Friday

 SDSU 7, Stanford 1

Cylie Halvorson belted two of the Jackrabbits’ three homers – driving in five runs in the process – and Grace Glanzer tossed a three-hitter.
Emma Osmundson, who finished 2-for-3, singled to lead off the fourth.

Halvorson hammered a 1-1 pitch over the fence in dead centerfield to put SDSU on the board.

The Cardinal got a solo shot from Aly Kaneshiro with one away in the bottom of the fifth.

The Jackrabbits quickly responded.

Kelsey Lenox singled with one out in the sixth.

Jocelyn Carrillo followed with a no-doubter to left. The two-run homer gave the Jackrabbits a 4-1 advantage.

In the seventh, Allison Beaudry started a two-out rally by drawing a base on balls. Tori Tollefson picked up a pinch-hit single.

Halvorson’s second home run – a deep drive to left-center – provided for the final margin.

Glanzer allowed just the one run on three hits in her 21st complete game of the season. She got 10 groundouts, nine flyouts and one strikeout while issuing one walk. The Jackrabbits turned a double play on a lineout to end the game.

Alana Vawter took the loss in the circle after giving up seven runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Kristina Inouye was 2-for-2 at the plate.
