BROOKINGS –  South Dakota State University held its annual Arbor Day event April 28.

Tanner Aiken, horticulturist and project manager with SDSU Facilities and Services, and John Ball, professor, SDSU Extension forestry specialist and South Dakota Department of Agriculture forest health specialist, led the planting of seven bare-root trees along Medary Avenue, in an area east of Wecota and Winona halls. The species were Espresso Coffeetree, StreetKeeper Honeylocust and Triumph Elm. This year’s event focused on street trees and maintaining diversity with the university’s tree canopy.

In addition, SDSU was recognized for being a Tree Campus USA Higher Education institution. The program has recognized South Dakota State annually since 2009.
