BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University is investigating an allegation of discrimination and harassment that occurred Thursday in a campus residence hall toward a student living in that building, the university said in a statement Friday.
The statement from the university does not specify what prompted the response, but an SDSU football player tweeted a photo Thursday night, of a message smeared on a bathroom mirror that included profanity and a racial slur.
“SDSU does not tolerate incidents involving discrimination and harassment. The university has launched an investigation into the matter and will hold accountable any individual or individuals found responsible in accordance with our university policies and procedures,” the statement from the university says.
“Diversity and inclusion are core values at SDSU, and we support an inclusive, collaborative and cohesive environment of ideas, perspectives and backgrounds. SDSU is a place where our students, faculty and staff feel welcomed and valued. The allegations do not reflect the views of the university and our efforts to embrace a diverse and inclusive community,” the statement says.
A statement from Jackrabbit Athletics also condemns the alleged discrimination and harassment:
“South Dakota State University Athletics and our Diversity in Athletics Council condemns all acts of discrimination and harassment.
“The university is investigating an incident of discrimination and harassment that occurred early today on our campus. It serves as a reminder that we must remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding the university's core values of diversity and inclusion.
“This will only strengthen our resolve to affect change and be a catalyst for all to feel safe, welcome and valued,” the message from Jackrabbit Athletics concludes.
