Lack of quality courts behind decision

BROOKINGS (AP) – South Dakota State University is cutting its men’s and women’s tennis programs at the end of the academic year.

Athletic Director Justin Sell says a lack of quality tennis courts on campus and in Brookings was a primary factor in the decision.

The move will affect 19 athletes, a full-time coach and a student assistant coach. The school will honor the athletes’ scholarships and help those who want to transfer to other schools.

The tennis programs were cut once before, in 1983, but they were reinstated in 1991. SDSU will continue to have 19 other varsity sports.
