Rough Riders sweep Bobcat volleyball Tuesday

BROOKINGS – Sioux Falls Roosevelt topped the Bobcats 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 in a nonconference volleyball match Tuesday at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

Brookings led for a majority of Set 1 before the Rough Riders rallied. It was tied at 20, 21 and 22 before setter Elizabeth Denevan dropped in a kill to put Roosevelt on top for good. 

Annika Svenningsen and Kat Charging exchanged kills before Svenningsen came through with another kill to end the stanza.

The Riders started fast in the second, pulling out to a 14-6 advantage. Brookings cut the deficit to three points on four occasions – the last coming at 21-18.

Roosevelt led 17-12 in Set 3 en route to securing the sweep.

“I thought we competed well,” said BHS coach Tina Birgen. “I thought defensively we did some really good things tonight. Our back-row defense I thought was fantastic.

“Serve-receive fell apart a little bit at times. We served okay. We had some moments that we just lost.

“There were some things that we missed at critical moments. If we fix those things at critical moments, it’s a totally different game.

“Allie Clark stepped in in a new spot (back row) tonight and I thought she did a great job.”

Zoie Husman and Abby Ward both totaled seven kills for Roosevelt, which improved to 2-3. Denevan dished out 19 set assists. Svenningsen recorded six blocks. Kat Nelson notched 12 digs and Paige Schlueter added 11. Autumn Freese netted a trio of service aces.

For the Bobcats, Charging had seven kills with Gracie Adamson and Landree Wilson both chipping in with six.

Brittany Birgen (12) and Mackenzie Weber (seven) combined for 19 set assists.

Adamson had three blocks and Haley Sampson two. Sydney Schneider logged three aces, Weber two and Clark one.

Schneider paced the defense with 21 digs and Tessa Nelson tallied 14.

Brookings (1-5) heads to Huron on Thursday.
