Roger Miguel Oines lost his seven-year battle with cancer and kidney disease on Feb. 15, 2021.
Passing away peacefully at Good Samaritan Nursing home in Sioux Falls, with family by his side during the COVID-19 Lock Downs. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Miller Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Roger was born at home in Estelline, SD, to Henry Barnard Oines and Margaret (Larson) Oines on May 10, 1943. Margaret was in quarantine with scarlet fever at the time.
Roger spent his school years in town and the summers out on the farm. After high school, in 1962 he enlisted into the US Navy. After basic training Roger spent his Navy days cooking on the USS Breckinridge carrying soldiers to and from the Vietnam War. After the Navy, Roger earned his meat cutter certificate from National Meat Cutting School in Toledo, OH.
In 1969 he married Judy Hawley in Estelline, SD and together they adopted a son in 1976. In 1978 they moved to Gillette, WY.
In 1981 Roger married Mildred Elaine Lundberg in Gillette, WY. Together they raised two sons and a daughter while in Gillette.
Roger worked at Campbell County Landfill most of his time in Gillette. He started as a heavy equipment operator. From there he worked his way up to Superintendent of CC Landfill. Retiring from CC Landfill in 2001 Roger moved along with his wife and two youngest kids to Brookings, SD.
While retired he worked odd jobs around Brookings area including HyVee, Lake Norden milk delivery, ground maintenance at South Dakota State University, and United Living Community.
Roger was strong in his faith. He was baptized at the same time as his oldest son in the 80’s in Gillette, WY. He has been a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Brookings SD since 2002.
Roger was an avid Camper and fisherman. He would work 10 days in a row to have 4 days off. On the 4 days he would pack up the family and take them to Custer State Park for a bi-weekly camping/fishing trip. Roger may have loved fishing but strongly disliked eating the fish. Roger also had a great love for gardening to the point that most yards that he had would be halved and half would be turned into a vegetable garden. To the point that there was always home canned food in his home.
Roger was preceded in death by his brother, Richard, a grandchild, and his parents.
Roger was survived by his wife, Mildred Oines; son, Ryan (Renae) Oines of Sioux Falls, SD; son, Christopher (Jennifer) Oines of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Amanda (Jerry) Lass of Brookings, SD; grandkids, Tori Bertelsen, Ryker Oines and Miranda Lass; his brothers, Ronald Oines of Estelline, SD and Robert (Marianne) Oines of North Port, FL; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
