BROOKINGS – Brookings Police are investigating a suspected discharge of a firearm and asking for the public’s help, Lt. Marci Gebers said.
The incident was reported at 1:33 a.m. Sunday. Officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of Southland Lane for what sounded like fireworks or a firearm, Gebers said.
“The caller had stated that they believed it sounded more like a handgun than fireworks,” Gebers said. “Initially, it was reported that there were several shots.”
It is illegal to discharge a firearm within city limits, she confirmed.
“Officers, when they arrived in the area, were unable to locate anyone or hear any further shots,” Gebers said.
“The following day, officers were notified of some shell casings that were located there in the parking lot in the same vicinity of where the call was. Those were collected as evidence and the investigation is ongoing,” she said.
“Officers did not locate any damage consistent with a firearm being discharged in the area,” Gebers said.
“If anyone in that neighborhood hears anything that sounds like a firearm being discharged or fireworks going off, please call us so we can respond and investigate,” she said.
