Ranger Roundup: Girls 14U picks up two wins

The Rangers’ Boys JV, Girls 14U, and Pee Wee 1 all picked up wins over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Boys JV

Brookings split a pair of season-opening league games over the Thanksgiving weekend, falling to Sioux Falls (2) on Friday and defeating Sioux Center on Sunday. Their record stands at 1-1.

Brookings hosts Aberdeen’s #2 team on Friday at 7 p.m., then travels to Mitchell for a 6 p.m. game the following night.

Friday

Sioux Falls (2) 3, Brookings 2

The Flyers opened a two-goal lead 1:39 into the second period and would hang on to defeat Brookings despite being out-shot 28-23 in the game.

Trailing 2-0, Geoffrey Svobodny scored 11:49 into the second period to cut the Sioux Falls lead in half. Spencer Heflin had the assist.

The Flyers would retake a two-goal lead with just 2:22 remaining to play in the game, but an unassisted goal from Jacob Kahle at 16:08 of the period brought the Rangers within a goal.

Brookings could not add the equalizer in the final 52 seconds.

Egan Jensen took the loss in goal, stopping 20 of 23 shots.

Sunday

Brookings 3, Sioux Center 0

Despite out-shooting the Storm 19-5 in both the first and second periods, the lone goal in the first 34 minutes of the game was scored on the power play by Aidan Austreim with 5:22 left in the second period, off an assist from Cooper Deatherage.

Jacob Law found the back of the net 47 seconds into the third period to give Brookings a 2-0 lead, with Jackson Law and Gage Peterson accounting for the assists.

Deatherage made it 3-0 with under four minutes to play on a man-advantage, with Kahle providing the helper, and that score would hold up as the final.

The Rangers had just one penalty in the game to the Storm’s eight, and the Rangers out-shot Sioux Center 57-14 for the game.

Nathan Brecher stopped all 14 shots he faced to pick up the win in goal.

Bantam A

Friday

Yankton 3, Brookings 1

Brookings out-shot Yankton 33-13 but wound up on the short end of a 3-1 decision on Friday night in Yankton.

The Miracle scored on the power play near the mid-point of the first period to open a 1-0 lead, then made it a 2-0 advantage 7:20 into the third period.

Brookings’ Tre Christopherson cut the Yankton lead in half at 8:17 of the third, off assists from Jackson Heller and Talon Hyde, but Brookings would again fall behind by two goals a couple minutes later, accounting for the final 3-1 score.

Ryder Anderson suffered the loss in goal, stopping 10 of 13 shots he faced.

Brookings plays host to the Dakota Premier Classic sponsored by Best Choice Real Estate this weekend with five Bantam A level teams coming to Brookings. The Rangers play Sioux City at 3 p.m. Friday, Waconia at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, and Waconia at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon, with placing games starting at 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Bantam B

Yankton 5, Brookings 3

After a scoreless first period, Yankton netted a pair of goals to open a 2-0 lead.

Weston Baker scored with 3:57 left in the second period to cut the lead in half at 2-1, but the Miracle would take back a two-score advantage on the power play just 78 seconds later.

Connor Buckley would get the Rangers again within a goal off assists from Keygan Peterson and Baker.

The Miracle continues the back-and-forth trend to open the third period with a goal 2:18 into the period before Peterson scored three minutes later to again bring Brookings within a goal.

Yankton would add an empty-net goal with 18 seconds left to account for the final 5-3 score.

Brookings was out-shot 27-22 in the loss, with goaltender Matthew Bothe stopping 22 of 26 shots he faced.

The Rangers host the Dakota Premier Classic sponsored by Best Choice Real Estate this weekend as seven Bantam B level teams envelop the Larson Ice Center.

Brookings will play Becker Big Lake at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, West Fargo at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, and Fairmont at 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Placement games start at 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Girls 14U

Saturday

Brookings 6, Aberdeen 0

The Rangers scored on six of 19 shots and Rorii Quam stopped all 21 shots she faced in goal as Brookings picked up a win on Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen.

Brookings scored five goals in the first period, all in the first 8:09 of the game.

Taryn Richter scored just 57 seconds into the game to give Brookings a 1-0 lead.

Ava Kahle lit the lamp 46 seconds later to make it 2-0, then Richter netted her second goal 4:23 into the game to open a 3-0 lead.

Kahle scored back-to-back goals at 6:03 and 8:09 to give her a hat trick and extend the Ranger lead to 5-0.

After a scoreless second period, Emily Meyer broke the scoring drought 3:03 into the third period off an assist from Graciana Peterson to make it 6-0, which was the final score.

Sunday

Brookings 2, Oahe 1

Miyah Foerster scored 4:58 into the third period to provide the winning goal as Brookings completed a perfect weekend.

After a scoreless first period the Capitals got on the scoreboard first, 6:09 into the second period.

Anna Rasmussen knotted the score at a goal each with 2:25 left in the period, off assists from Richter and Foerster as the game entered the third period tied at one, before Foerster scored to give Brookings the lead and the eventual win.

Brookings out-shot the Capitals 28-10, with Quam again earning the win in goal, stopping nine of 10 shots.

Brookings is now 2-1 in league play. The Rangers play at Mitchell on Saturday at 2 p.m. for their lone game of the upcoming weekend.

PeeWee 1

Brookings placed third at their home Dakota Premier Classic sponsored by Brookings Health System, finishing the weekend 2-2.

Friday, pool play game one

Brookings 6, Brandon Valley 1

Neil Trygstad stopped 10 of 11 shots on goal as Brookings defeated Brandon Valley to open the tournament.

Colt Vanmaanen scored with 7:18 to play in the second period to give Brookings their first goal, assisted by Carter Nielsen and Maxx Anderson.

Nolan Krogman found the back of the net two minutes later for the Rangers’ second goal off an assist from Ethan Foerster.

Mauer Bartley scored unassisted with 1:57 left in the period for Brookings’ third goal, and Nielsen added a fourth Ranger goal just 54 seconds later, assisted by Un Hyeng Keay, as the Rangers led 4-1 through two periods.

1:43 into the third period, Bartley scored his second goal. Jack Lovseth and Colin Jacobson had the assists.

Foerster completed the scoring with 9:02 left in the game to make it 6-1. Cade Zweber had the helper.

Saturday, pool play game two

Aberdeen 5, Brookings 2

The Rangers were held scoreless through two periods before breaking the ice in the third period with a pair of goals.

Atwood Ahmann scored with 7:07 to play for Brookings’ first goal, and Mason Diers scored 23 seconds later for the second Ranger tally.

Brookings out-shot Aberdeen 22-21 for the game.

Saturday, pool play game three

Sioux City Gold 2, Brookings 1

The Rangers were defeated by Sioux City despite out-shooting their opponent 33 to 11.

Krogman scored the lone Brookings goal with 1:08 left in the first period, assisted by Foerster.

Sunday, third-place game

Brookings 11, Brandon Valley 5

Foerster tallied seven points – two goals and five assists – as Brookings claimed third place in their home tournament.

Zweber also had a hat trick in the win.

The Rangers scored 11 goals on just 23 shots, with goals coming from Zweber (3), Foerster (2), Krogman (2), Keay, Bartley, and Cannon Friedrich.

Zweber (2), Krogman (2), Anderson, Isaac Andal, Vanmaanen, and Foerster (5) had assists.

Brookings plays at Yankton Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. in their only game of the upcoming weekend.

PeeWee 3

The Brookings PeeWee 3 team finished 0-4 in the C Division of the Dakota Premier Classic sponsored by Brookings Health System.

Friday, pool play game one

Boji 8, Brookings 1

Max Jensen had the lone goal – unassisted - for the Rangers as Boji scored five goals in the first period and never looked back.

Brookings was out-shot 36 to 26 in the game.

Jon Drew stopped 28 of 36 shots in on goal.

Saturday, pool play game two

Aberdeen 7, Brookings 1

Jensen again had the only Brookings goal, scored 3:20 into the third period, as Aberdeen went on to win 7-1.

The Rangers were more than doubled up on shots, facing 47 from the Cougars and having just 17 of their own.

Saturday, pool play game three

TC Storm 7, Brookings 1

Jeremiah Hovey scored off assists from Jensen and Andrew Haufschild, but the Storm would go on to win 7-1.

Brookings was out-shot 40 to 15.

Sunday, game four

Yankton 6, Brookings 5

Both teams combined for 94 shots on goal – Yankton with 60 and Brookings with 34, but the Miracle scored one more goal than Brookings to pick up the win.

Haufschild scored in the first period off an assist from Jensen.

Jensen then scored four consecutive goals, two in both the second and third periods.

Ty Harris, Landon Schumacher, and Haufschild had assists on Jensen’s goals.

The Rangers travel to Mitchell for an 11 a.m. game on Saturday, and to Aberdeen on Sunday for a noon game.
