Ramsbottom to address South Dakota Art Museum Guild

BROOKINGS – The South Dakota Art Museum Guild will host its first program of the 2022-23 season on Tuesday, Sept. 27, featuring Abigail Ramsbottom.

The public is invited to hear Ramsbottom speak about her goals as she steps into the newly created position of coordinator and curator of education at the South Dakota Art Museum.

The public is invited to hear Ramsbottom talk at 10 a.m. at the South Dakota Art Museum. Coffee and social time will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Ramsbottom has titled her program, “A Newcomer to the Prairie.” She came to the museum this summer from Richmond, Virginia. She spent most of her life between Florida and Virginia, so Brookings has provided her with a whole new landscape.

She holds a bachelor of arts in art history and Spanish from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, and a master of arts degree in art history from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia.

Ramsbottom’s career path has been rich and varied, from a gallery assistant, art museum coordinator to teaching English for speakers of other languages.

She is certified in the teaching methodology of visual thinking strategies and will provide training in this methodology as part of her duties in her new job at the South Dakota Art Museum. Serving as coordinator/curator of education, she plans to encourage museum engagement in the community through a variety of events and activities. In her words, she will emphasize participant-centered experiences for people to make their own meaning of art.

The guild programs provide lively conversation and interesting speakers from South Dakota and across the U.S. The guild supports the South Dakota Art Museum through programs like this, various volunteer opportunities, and contributing to the art acquisition fund.

Guild membership is not required to attend these free programs. However, $20 annual dues support these programs and the guild art acquisition fund. Membership is open to all.

Monthly programs begin in September and run through May. For a complete list of guild programs, visit www.SouthDakotaArtMuseum.com/Guild.

The South Dakota Art Museum is located at 1036 Medary Ave. in Brookings. There is designated parking on Harvey Dunn Street, just west of the museum.
