BROOKINGS – John Thompson will be the new public works director for Brookings, according to information in a Thursday news release from the city.
He will start on Sept. 6, and will oversee a department with 32 full-time employees, according to Brookings City Manager Paul Briseno, who added that Thompson’s salary will be toward the top of a range between $106,221 and $143,711.
Thompson currently lives in Clovis, California, and has been with Fresno County for the past 15 years and most recently as the assistant county administrative officer and formerly the assistant public works director, according to the release.

“I am excited and honored to be selected as the public works director for the City of Brookings and look forward to joining the team and serving the needs of the Brookings community,” Thompson said in the release. “My wife and I are originally from the area and love the culture and community feel. Bringing our dreams home.”
Brookings began its search for a public works director a year ago. The process was expanded multiple times to assure the proper candidate fit for the organization and community.
“We are excited to welcome John Thompson and his family to the Brookings community,” Briseno said in the release. “John’s vast experience in public works and government will assist in progressing the current efforts of staff, organization, and City Council. Brookings has a great team of dedicated employees and John will have the opportunities to provide a significant impact through his leadership.”
The first few months of Thompson’s employment will be focused on establishing relationships and understanding the organization/community, according to the release.
