BROOKINGS – A fire in an apartment building Wednesday has suspicious origins, according to the Brookings Police.

The fire was reported at 6:52 a.m. Wednesday and occurred in an apartment building in the 2300 block of Yorkshire Drive, said Lt. Derrick Powers.

“It was called in as smoke was in the building. Determined it was coming from a public area in the building,” Powers said.

“The fire department responded and found that the fire had extinguished itself and smoke had filled the room,” he said. “It was determined that the fire was suspicious in nature. It’s under investigation.”

Powers added there was smoke damage and very minimal structural damage to the building but no injuries.
