BROOKINGS – A Brookings man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and other charges after he allegedly crashed an ATV into a tree Tuesday night and fled the scene, according to Brookings Police.

Police were called to the 300 block of Third Avenue South shortly before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of an ATV that hit a tree, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

Officers who arrived at the scene found that a 2013 Can Am Maverick side-by-side ATV hit a tree, and the driver had left the scene.

Powers said officers were able to locate the suspected driver, 31-year-old Timothy Morrissey of Brookings, at about 11:50 p.m. at a residence in the 400 block of Third Avenue South. Officers observed injuries, but the suspect declined medical attention.

Powers said officers observed signs that the suspect had allegedly been drinking, and sobriety tests were administered.

“It was determined that he was under the influence of alcoholic beverage, and as a result he was arrested for DUI. He was also charged with felony hit-and-run and reckless driving,” Powers said. Prior to being transported to the detention center, Morrissey was medically cleared by the hospital, he added.

Powers said damage to the ATV was extensive.
