BUSHNELL — An early morning structure fire left a home on the main drag in Bushnell a total loss.
According to a release from Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Department, crews from around the county responded to a fire in progress at Railroad Avenue in Bushnell shortly after midnight Thursday.
The residence was completely engulfed when fire crews arrived, Sebring said.
The resident noticed smoke inside the residence and evacuated immediately. They were treated for smoke inhalation on the scene and released.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze and the Red Cross assisted in finding temporary assistance for the resident.
“I was told at the scene it was a complete loss,” Sebring said. “I don’t know how badly the structure burned or anything like that at this time, but we were told it was a complete loss.”
The damages were initially estimated at $35,000, according to the release.
No firefighters were injured while putting out the fire. Crews from the Sheriff’s Office, Aurora Fire Department, Bruce Fire Department, Brookings Fire Department, Elkton Fire Department, White Fire Department, Sinai Fire Department, Volga Fire Department, Brookings Ambulance and Brookings County Emergency Management responded to the scene.
The cause of the fire was initially unknown and the incident remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
