BROOKINGS – One driver was cited after a two-vehicle collision on Saturday, according to Brookings Police.

The crash was reported at 9:38 p.m. Saturday and occurred at the intersection of 22nd Avenue and Sixth Street, Lt. Marci Gebers said.

Jairo Garcia, 20, of Flandreau, was driving a 2012 Hyundai Elantra with a passenger. Margaret Theobald, 18, of Sioux Falls, was driving a 2012 Honda CRV with a passenger.

“(Garcia) was traveling north on 22nd Avenue and they were going to continue north through that intersection, when (Theobald), who was traveling southbound on 22nd Avenue, attempted to turn east onto Sixth Street and failed to yield to (Garcia’s vehicle), who was traveling northbound,” Gebers said.

Garcia had a green light and Theobald had a flashing yellow light, Gebers said.

“Mr. Garcia was issued citations for driving without a valid license and failure to maintain financial responsibility,” Gebers said. “(Theobald) was not issued any citations.”

The front ends of both vehicles were damaged, and both had to be towed, she said. Garcia’s Elantra sustained $3,900 in damage and Theobald’s Honda sustained $7,800 in damage.

The Brookings Ambulance responded, but no one was transported, Gebers said.
