BROOKINGS – Brookings County commissioners appointed Teree Nesvold as the acting Brookings County state’s attorney at the start of Tuesday’s county commission meeting.

Above, Nesvold is sworn in by Circuit Judge Greg Stoltenburg.

With many congratulations from members of the audience, she took the oath of office and signed the necessary paperwork to begin her duties immediately. She also took time during her report to the commissioners to thank them for entrusting her with the role.

Nesvold has been with the Brookings County state’s attorney’s office since 2015, when she was hired as a deputy state’s attorney.

She holds the temporary spot until the November election for state’s attorney. To go with her new position, she received a pay raise. Her new salary is $100,419.

To help staff the state’s attorney’s office during this time, the county commissioners also appointed Steve Britzman, the Brookings city attorney, as a part-time deputy state’s attorney on Tuesday.

Britzman will continue his role as city attorney, which is a part-time position he has held since 2000. Before that, he was the deputy city attorney from 1983-1996. This is the first time he has worked in the Brookings County state’s attorney’s office. His role with the department will last until the November election. He’ll be paid a wage of $39.67 per hour.

The person elected as state’s attorney this November will fill out the remaining two years of former Brookings County State’s Attorney Abigail Howard’s four-year term.

Howard served 13 months as the state’s attorney before starting as magistrate judge for the Third Judicial Circuit on Jan. 29.
