BROOKINGS – A motorcyclist hit a parked pickup, causing thousands of dollars in damage to both vehicles.

The crash was reported at 1:32 p.m. April 4 and occurred in the 500 block of Heritage Drive, Brookings Police Lt. Marci Gebers said.

“When officers arrived, they determined that this actually occurred in a nearby parking lot,” Gebers said.

Jasmine West, 25, of Vermillion, was operating a 2016 Honda CBR300RA motorcycle, Gebers said. She was wearing a helmet.

“The motorcycle had crashed into the back of a 2014 Dodge Ram pickup, causing damage to the rear bumper and tailgate area of the pickup,” Gebers said, adding the Dodge was parked and unoccupied at the time of the crash.

“It sounds like the female who was operating the motorcycle was not very familiar with the controls of the motorcycle; accelerated at a high rate of speed, lost control and struck the rear bumper of the pickup,” Gebers said.

“She suffered minor injuries and was later transported to the Brookings emergency department,” Gebers said.

EMS responded to the scene, but West “chose to go by private vehicle rather than being transported,” Gebers said.

Damage to the Dodge was estimated at $3,000; damage to the motorcycle was also estimated at $3,000, Gebers said.
