Medary Ave. to be converted to gravel south of 20th St. S.

BROOKINGS – Due to the deteriorating road surface on Medary Avenue south of 20th Street South, the Public Works Department will convert the paved surface in this section of Medary Avenue to gravel on Tuesday, weather permitting.

This gravel surface will be left in a similar condition as the road surface further south on Medary Avenue going to 32nd Street South. This new gravel road surface will allow the city to better maintain the roadway and help reduce roadway closures in the future, the city reported in a press release.

Starting Tuesday, Medary Avenue from 20th Street South to 32nd Street South will be closed to through traffic. During that time, Bowes Construction will reclaim the roadway, turning the paved surface into gravel, grading and then rolling it to provide a smooth surface. This 1,600-foot section from the intersection of 20th Street South and Medary Avenue to the Fishback Soccer complex driveway should take approximately one to two days to complete.

Residents can expect to see detours during this time. Traffic going south on Medary Avenue will be detoured west on 20th Street South to Main Avenue, south down Main Avenue, and then east on 32nd Street South back to Medary Avenue. For traffic going north on Medary Avenue, use the opposite route.

“The city appreciates everyone’s patience during this work,” the press release says  For questions regarding this work, contact the Engineering Division at 605-697-8624.
