BROOKINGS – A Brookings man was arrested for rape after he broke into a residence over the weekend, according to the Brookings Police.
The incident was reported Saturday evening and allegedly took place that morning at the woman’s residence in Brookings, said Assistant Chief Derrick Powers.
“An adult female reported that earlier in the day a male, unknown to her, had entered the residence and sexually assaulted her,” Powers said.
After an investigation, officers were able to identify and locate the male suspect.
“He was arrested for second degree rape and first degree burglary,” Powers said.
The 26-year-old Brookings resident was transported to the Brookings County Detention Center, where he is still being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
Second degree rape is rape “through the use of force, coercion, or threats of immediate and great bodily harm against the victim or other persons within the victim’s presence, accompanied by apparent power of execution,” according to South Dakota Statute 22-22-1. It is a Class 1 felony.
First degree burglary is when “the offender inflicts, or attempts or threatens to inflict, physical harm on another,” according to South Dakota Statute 22-32-1. It is a Class 2 felony.
