AUSTIN, Texas – Mike Daum’s illustrious collegiate career came to an end Tuesday as South Dakota State dropped a 79-73 decision to Texas in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament at the Frank Erwin Center.

Daum and the Jackrabbits got off to a slow start.

Texas made seven of its first eight shots while building a 19-0 advantage.

Daum went nearly 14 minutes without a point.

However, the Kimball, Neb., native and fifth-year player got things going after that – as did SDSU.

Daum finished with 25 points on 11-of-21 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds for his 55th double-double. He played all 40 minutes.

The Jackrabbits cut the deficit to 43-35 at halftime.

Later, an 8-0 spurt saw SDSU grab its first lead.

Daum hit back-to-back jumpers, David Jenkins added a bucket and Daum threw one down on a breakaway to make it 67-64 in favor of the Jacks with 8:12 showing on the clock.

Courtney Ramey answered with a 3-pointer for the Longhorns.

Dylan Osetkowski went 1-of-2 from the foul line after coming up with a steal with 7:28 remaining and Texas never trailed again.

Osetkowski, who had a career game with 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting, dunked with 6:28 to play to push the margin to 70-67.

Daum halted the spurt with another jumper with 3:11 to go. Osetkowski countered with a basket with 2:53 left.

Jenkins’ foul shots pulled SDSU within 72-71 with 2:26 left.

Matt Coleman III and Daum exchanged buckets soon thereafter, leaving the score at 74-73 with 1:24 to play.

Osetkowski dropped in a free throw with 59 seconds to go and Coleman went 2-of-2 at the stripe with 41 seconds left to make it 77-73.

The Jackrabbits couldn’t connect from long range after that as the Longhorns held on.

Ramey added 13 points and Kerwin Roach II 12 off the bench.

Jenkins had 19 points and senior Skyler Flatten contributed 14 for the Jackrabbits.

South Dakota State, the Summit League regular-season champions, finished the year with a 24-9 record.
