BROOKINGS – Luke Lind pitched a gem as North Dakota State beat South Dakota State 3-0 to open a three-game Summit League baseball series Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound senior right-hander threw a one-hit shutout and struck out a career-best 11 batters.

Lind retired 27 of the 30 batters he faced and didn’t allow a runner to reach second base until the final inning.

The Bison offense recorded four of its six hits during a two-run third inning.

No. 8 hitter Danny Palmiscno got it going with a single to center and then moved to second on Alec Abercrombie’s sacrifice bunt. Bennett Hostetler’s hit put runners on the corners.

Drew Fearing’s bunt single plated Palmiscno and Mason Pierzchalski followed with an RBI single to center to give NDSU a 2-0 cushion.

Lind, who struck out the side in the first and third innings, retired the first 14 batters he faced before the Jackrabbits’ Philip Jacobson came up with his team’s lone hit – a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth.

Lind sat down the next six but hit Newt Johnson with a pitch with two outs in the seventh.

Lind again stranded the runner as he retired five consecutively before surrendering his only walk of the day, which came against Nick Smith with one out in the ninth

Smith advanced to second on Josh Kunzmann’s groundout but Matt Johnson lined out to center to end the game.

NDSU plated an unearned run in the fifth as Busch doubled with one out and scored after SDSU shortstop Tony Kjolsing was charged for a fielding error on JT Core’s batted ball.

Jackrabbit Brett Mogen, who was making his first career start, gave up three runs – two earned – on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in 7 1/3 innings of work.

Due to potential inclement weather Sunday, SDSU (16-20, 9-10) and NDSU (20-20, 11-8) are going to wrap up the series today with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
