Lady Knights, Patriots lead after Day 1

SIOUX FALLS/BRANDON – It’s not surprising that Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Lincoln lead the team totals with 324 points as action finished up on Thursday at the SDHSAA Girls’ State Tennis Tournament.

Both the Lady Knights and Patriots have all six of their individuals and all three of their doubles teams on the right side of the bracket heading into Day 2.

The tournament concludes on Saturday at McKennan Park in Sioux Falls.

Mitchell is third with 307 points, followed by Rapid City Stevens (301) and Watertown (249).

Brookings had two first-round winners as Jane Ardry defeated Milbank’s Jodi DeVaal, 10-4, at No. 1 singles before falling, 10-2, to Harrisburg’s Sydney Rott in Round 2.

Ardry stayed alive with an 8-2 win over Vermillion’s Brandi Styles in the consolation bracket and faces Rapid City Stevens’ Peyton Forney in the consolation quarterfinals.

Skylor Ness won her first-round match over Huron’s Madelynn Lord, 10-1, at No. 6, but then dropped a 10-2 decision to Yankton’s Maggie Schaefer. Ness takes on Vermillion’s Kayla Andersen in consolation action today.

At No. 3 singles, Kia Witt fell 10-7 in the first round to Aberdeen Central’s Mirra Frohling, and then lost 8-2 to Rapid City Central’s Dayton Franke in the consolation bracket to be eliminated.

At No. 4 singles, Dhwani Kharel lost 10-1 to Aberdeen Central’s Jennifer Appl in the first round and then was eliminated with an 8-0 consolation loss to Aberdeen Roncalli’s Allison Schock.

At No. 5 singles, Marina Du dropped a 10-1 decision to Pierre’s Kailee Schultz in the opening round before falling 8-3 in the consolation bracket to Aberdeen Roncalli’s Alexandra Muller to be eliminated.

In No. 2 doubles action, Witt and Kharel lost 10-5 to Yankton’s Olivia Tennant and Aurora Papstein in the first round, and then dropped an 8-3 decision to Brandon Valley’s Kate Lundberg and Annabelle Schultz to be eliminated.

At No. 3 doubles, Du and Ness fell 10-6 in the first round to Milbank’s Hattie Muellenbach and Jenna Johnson, and then dropped an 8-2 decision in the consolation bracket to Sioux Falls Roosevelt’s Danica Hubers and Cameron Harms to be eliminated.

With the absence of Abby Enevoldsen due to illness, the Bobcats didn’t compete at No. 2 singles or No. 1 doubles.
