JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The top-seeded Rangers capped off their season with a South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association state championship over the weekend in Sioux Center, Iowa. After a first-round bye, Brookings beat the host Storm, 6-0, and then won the title with a 3-0 shutout of Aberdeen to finish off its league play with a 19-1 record.

Championship

• Rangers 3, Aberdeen 0

After a scoreless first period, Addi Ramlo’s goal two minutes into the second period gave Brookings a 1-0 lead heading into the final period as Savannah Barber and Montana Myer set up the go-ahead goal.

The Rangers continued to dominate play as Barber tallied a power-play goal midway through the third off an assist from Ramlo and then Myer scored a minute later on an assist from Emma Rice for the final margin.

Brookings held a 33-12 edge in shots Jadyn Runge earned the shutout win with 12 saves.

Semifinal

• Rangers 6, Sioux Center 0

Myer scored late in the first period off a Barber assist to give Brookings a 1-0 lead after a period.

Less than five minutes into the second, Myer lit the lamp again as Barber and Ramlo picked up the assists before Ramlo found the back of the net off a Janaya Kuehl helper as the Rangers led 3-0 through two periods.

Brookings added three goals in the third – the first an unassisted tally by Barber; the second by Ramlo with the assist going to Barber; and then an unassisted goal by Jenna Schulte with less than three minutes to play.

The Rangers outshot Sioux Center, 24-14, as Runge stopped all 14 shots she faced for the shutout win.

BANTAM A

WATERTOWN – The third-seeded Rangers opened the SDAHA Bantam A State Tournament with a 5-2 win over Rushmore, but dropped their next two games by identical 3-1 scores to Sioux Falls West and Sioux Falls East to finish fourth.

Third-Place Game

• S.F. East 3, Rangers 1

East scored three goals in the first period to take control before Zach Weber tallied the Rangers’ lone goal off an assist by Max Kjelden 6 1/2 minutes into the third period for the final score.

The Flyers held a 29-24 edge in shots as Carter Schulz finished with 26 saves in goal in the loss.

Semifinal

• S.F. West 3, Rangers 1

After a scoreless first period, the Flyers scored twice in the second and then went up 3-0 with an early third-period goal.

Brookings got on the scoreboard 10 1/2 minutes into the third on Alec Rice’s power-play goal as Kjelden earned the assist.

The Rangers outshot West, 23-14, as Schulz stopped 11 Flyer shots in the loss.

First Round

• Rangers 5, Rushmore 2

The Thunder got on the scoreboard less than two minutes into the game but Zach Weber tied it up off a Kjelden helper before Ike Johnson tallied an unassisted goal to give Brookings a 2-1 lead after a period.

In the second, Kjelden lit the lamp off assists from Weber and Rice to push the Ranger lead to 3-1 before Rushmore pulled within a goal midway through the period.

Brookings tacked on two goals in the final frame as Jamison Honkomp found the back of the net off assists by Cole Mahlum and Johnson before Mahlum lit the lamp off a setup by Tristan VanDeVere for the three-goal win.

The Rangers held a 35-22 advantage in shots as Schulz collected 20 saves in the win.

BANTAM B

FORT PIERRE – The fouth-seeded Rangers posted a 2-1 record at the SDAHA Bantam B State Tournament to place third as they knocked off Sioux Falls, 3-2, in the third-place game. Brookings opened with a 1-0 win over Rushmore but fell 4-1 to top-seeded Sioux Center in the semifinals.

Third-Place Game

• Rangers 1, Rushmore 0

Wes Koenig’s goal off assists from Trevor Pederson and Nick Jonas late in the first period gave Brookings a 1-0 lead after a period and that goal held up as the Rangers claimed the third-place trophy.

The Rangers held a 26-9 edge in shots, including a 13-1 advantage in the first, as Kaden Gutormson earned the shutout win in goal with nine stops.

Semifinal

• Sioux Center 4, Rangers 1

After a scoreless first period, the Tornadoes took a 1-0 lead heading into the third period with a late power-play goal.

Koenig tied the game less than 90 seconds into the final period as Pederson picked up the assist, but Sioux Center tallied three unanswered goals to advance to the championship game.

The Tornadoes outshot Brookings, 22-14, as Gutormson collected 18 saves in the loss.

First Round

• Rangers 3, Sioux Falls 2

Jonas opened the scoring 3 1/2 minutes into play off an assist from Noah Ronning before Koenig lit the lamp off a setup from Jonas as Brookings led 2-0 after a period.

The Flyers pulled within 2-1 with a midway through the second and then tied the game eight minutes into the third. Koenig scored the game-winning goal a minute later off assists from Ronning and Jonas as the Rangers avenged two regular-season losses to Sioux Falls.

Brookings held a 23-17 advantage in shots with Gutormson stopped 15 shots for the win in goal.

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

The Rangers won a pair of league games last weekend to clinch the second seed in this coming weekend’s SDAHA Boys’ Junior Varsity Tournament in Rapid City. Brookings won 5-0 at Aberdeen on Saturday and then defeated Mitchell, 4-1, at Larson Ice Center on Sunday.

Brookings takes on the winner of the seventh-seeded Oahe Capitals and the 10th-seeded Sioux Falls Flyers play-in game at 6 p.m. on Friday.

• Rangers 4, Mitchell 1

Brookings outshot the Marlins 17-3 in the first period to control play early but only Kobe Ischen’s shot late in the period off an assist from Evan Becher found the back of the net as the Rangers led 1-0 after a period.

Riley Jacobsen pushed the lead to 2-0 through two with 5:20 to play in the second as Justin Mofle picked up the assist.

Mitchell scored late in the third to cut the lead in half but the Rangers answered with two goals in an 11-second span as Luc Bouchard tallied an unassisted goal with 53 seconds on the clock before Jordan Svobodny lit the lamp off a Jacobsen helper with 42 seconds to play for the final margin.

Brookings finished with a 33-19 advantage in shots as Philip Kuechenmeister collected 18 saves in the win.

• Rangers 5, Aberdeen 0

Bouchard scored the only goal of the first period off a setup by Jack McCarty as Brookings led 1-0 after one.

The Rangers scored three goals in the second as Becher netted the puck off an assist from Carter Shoup before Noah Drew converted a power-play chance six minutes into the frame with Ischen earning the assist. Jacobsen pushed the lead to 4-0 with the assist going to Alex Miley heading into the second intermission.

Jacobsen provided for the final margin with a power-play goal 6 1/2 minutes into the third as Dylan Park set up the goal as Brookings outshot the Cougars, 35-5, with Kuechenmeister stopping all five shots he faced in the shutout win.
