Jacks win weekly award, add Stahl, Henderson

SIOUX FALLS – For the second consecutive week, Coby Hilton has been named Summit League Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week as released by the league office Tuesday. 

Hilton grabbed the SDSU school record in the 200m dash at this weekend’s Bobcat Classic in San Marcos, Tex. The senior and Marshall, Minn. native clocked a 20.63 for first in the event and adds his name to the top of the Jacks’ all-time list. 

He also anchored the third-fastest 4x100 in school history Sunday when Emmanuel Phoulom-Smith, Trey Tiefenthaler, Daniel Clarke and himself teamed up for a 40.37 good enough for second place in the event.

This is the second weekly honor of Hilton’s career.

The Jacks will set final marks of the season before conference championships Friday at the USD Last Chance in Vermillion.

New additions

After going second and third in the boy’s 100m dash at last week’s Howard Wood Dakota Relays, Matthew Stahl and Evan Henderson are set to join the Jackrabbit sprint groups next year, announced by Associate Head Coach and sprints coach Eric Hanenberger on Tuesday.

Stahl, who signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Jackrabbits comes to Brookings from Washington High in Sioux Falls where he has stood out as one of the top high school sprinters in Eastern South Dakota. Specializing in the short sprints, Stahl clocked a 6.97 in the 60m dash during this year’s indoor season and has so far ran season-bests of 10.85 in the 100 and 22.13 in the 200.

An honor roll student, he was a state track participant each year since 2018, was named Most Outstanding Sophomore in 2019 and took home MVP honors at this year’s Lancer Indoor Meet and the Brandon Invitational.

Henderson joins the Jacks from Harrisburg High School where he ranks top five in school history in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x200m. So far during the 2021 season, he has clocked PRs 10.82 in 100m and 22.52 in 200m. 

Also a standout on the gridiron, Henderson lettered in football in 2019 and 2020, was named to the South Dakota Class AAA Academic All-State Team was a member of South Dakota Class AAA runner-up Tigers in 2020 and has lettered each year of competition in track and field while holding a 3.9642 GPA.

At last weekend’s Dakota Relays, the future teammates finished one after another in the finals of the boy’s 100m dash with Henderson taking second with a PR of 10.82, while Stahl followed for third, running a 10.89.
