It was smooth sailing for SDSU Friday after grinding out a couple wins in Omaha last weekend. The Jacks jumped out to a 23-9 lead and didn’t look back.

SDSU led 43-21 at halftime. The Fighting Hawks played evenly with Jacks in the third quarter as each team scored 18 points, but it was too little too late.

SDSU was led by Tylee Irwin who had 20 points. Myah Selland was not far behind with 19 points and seven rebounds. Tori Nelson had 11 points and Paiton Burckhard had nine.

The Jacks shot 42.9% from the field and were 10-for-28 from three. They held the Fighting Hawks to 32.8% shooting from the field and UND was 3-for-10 from three. SDSU won the rebounding battle 46-32.

It wasn’t pretty, but SDSU came away with the win and that’s all that matters. SDSU shot just 37.7% from the field and were 6-for-31 from three on Saturday.

“I think anybody can take away something,” said SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston. “If a team says ‘ok we’re going to play 10 feet and in.’ It’s what you have. So I don’t think I look at any of [our shots] think they were quick or they were rushed or wrong timed. Not at all. But at the same point you don’t want to settle for anything the other team is telling you to do. There’s a balance there, so we’ll just have to work through that and make sure that we’re comfortable with that. Just ratio threes to none threes.

“But as long as we have the right people taking the right shots, which I think we do, we’re going to live with that. Because ultimately to be a high level team you can’t be one dimensional. … We’re going to have to find a way to move that perimeter shooting far ahead and just be more consistent,” Johnston said.

It was the defense that gave the Jacks the victory. They held UND to 29.3% shooting from field and the Fighting Hawks were 2-for-21.

“An emphasis for us was to get better defensively. Especially in conference play. Honestly I think we’ve gotten really good at communicating with each other and playing as a team. Moving together as a team so that it’s not just one-on-one and we can close gaps and rebound as a team and we’ve gotten really good at that. So we’ve gotten better at that as the conference season has progressed,” Selland said.

SDSU led wire to wire and had a double-digit lead for most of the game. SDSU had three players in double figures. Selland and Burckhard each had 15 points. Burckhard also had 14 rebounds to give her a double-double. Irwin had 14 points and six rebounds.

Johnston said it was nice to see balanced scoring this weekend.

“I thought [balanced scoring] was really important. I thought that was fantastic. Paiton played fantastic tonight. … She looks like she got back to her pace where she’s really playing at assertively offensively. … Tori I thought, a little foul trouble, but played great. Tylee is playing as well as any guard in this league. … Myah plays hard all the time and she’s involved all the time., but she doesn’t have to carry what we do. There’s a lot of great players out there and this was a great example of it,” Johnston said.

Up next, the Jacks will travel to Denver to take on the Pioneers in back-to-back games Friday and Saturday. Each game is set to start at 5 p.m.
