High school wrestling: Bobcats place third at Dan Unruh Invite

WAHPETON, N.D. – The Brookings Bobcats made their debut on the mat as they finished third in the 2022 Dan Unruh Invite in Wahpeton, N.D. on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats finished the event with 182.5 points, placing them behind first-place Lisbon, with 245.5 points, and West Fargo Sheyenne, with 226.0 points.

Tate Helmbolt finished in first place at 113 pounds and opened his afternoon with a via fall over Cesar Cruz of Grand Forks Central at 3:59. Helmbolt won by fall again over Tucker Hennessy at 2:51 of his second match before defeating Jake Mattern of West Fargo Sheyenne via forfeit in his third match. Helmbolt won his last two matches, defeating Lisbon’s Caydon Dawson by fall at 2:43 and Border West’s Zach Rikimoto at 3:42.

Elias McElroy finished 0-2 on the afternoon at 120 points for Brookings. After receiving a bye in his first match, he lost to Landon Zink of West Fargo Sheyenne via fall at 54 seconds. He received another bye in the consolation bracket before losing to Lisbon’s Greyson Lyons via fall at 3:39.

Luke DeRynck had a 3-2 record and placed fourth at 132 pounds. He lost in his first match via fall at 5:27 to Lisbon’s Kashden Wadeson but defeated Ottertail Central’s Tayden Soma via medical forfeit. DeRynck defeated Anthony Rousu of Ottertail Central via a 17-1 technical fall at 3:49 and won via a 4-3 decision over Breckenridge/Wahpeton’s Riley Kappes in the consolation semifinals. DeRynck’s afternoon ended in the third-place match, falling to West Fargo Sheyenne’s Jackson Alexander via fall in 38 seconds.

Sawyer Johnson went 1-2 on the afternoon at 132 pounds. He won by a 3-1 decision over Ryker Lachowitzer of Kindred in his first match but lost to Breckenridge/Wahpeton’s Riley Kappes via fall in 43 seconds and to Fargo North’s Nathan Morken via fall at 49 seconds.

Nolan Miles went 3-1 and placed second at 138 pounds. Miles won by fall over Kindred’s Zander Swenson at 2:58, Carson Roehl of Ottertail Central via 16-1 tech fall, and Lisbon’s Griffin Greenley via fall at 4:37 before losing via 3-1 decision to Border West’s Eli Larson in the championship match.

Spencer Christie went 2-2 in the tournament at 145 pounds. Christie lost by an 8-7 decision against Weston Jenson of Breckenridge/Wahpeton in his first match, received a bye in his second match, and defeated Fargo North’s Wyatt Medders via fall at 2:00. He lost his final match via fall at 3:33 to Eli Lyons of Lisbon.

James Patrick finished 2-2 in the tournament at 152 pounds. Patrick lost via fall at 33 seconds to Lisbon’s Mike Nelson, received a bye in his second match, and won via fall over Blake Wanner of Fargo North at 4:57. His day ended after losing to Tanner Menge of Kindred via fall at 2:04.

Mason Mathis also competed for Brookings at 152 pounds, going 3-2 and finishing in fifth place. Mathis received a bye in the opening round before defeating Tanner Menge of Kindred via a 4-2 decision. Mathis lost to Anton Perales of Grand Forks Central via a 3-2 decision in the semifinal and lost to West Fargo Sheyenne’s Mason Johnson via a 7-5 sudden victory. Mathis won the fifth-place match by defeating Fargo North’s Henry Maughan via a 5-0 decision.

Blake Kannegieter went 2-3 and finished in sixth place at 160 pounds. After receiving a bye in the opening round, he was defeated by Patrick Forcier of Border West via fall at 5:35. Kannegieter’s next match happened in the third round of the consolation bracket defeating Emmanuel Forjolo of Fargo North via Fall at 2:03. Kannegieter lost in the consolation semis via fall at 1:32 to Brody Nachbor of Border West and lost to Sawyer Carr of West Fargo Sheyenne via 15-0 tech fall in the fifth place match.

Joey Fitzpatrick went 4-1 and finished third at 170 pounds. After receiving a bye in the opening round, Fitzpatrick won via fall over Nicolas A-Lotito of Grand Forks Central at 48 seconds. Fitzpatrick was defeated by Connor Manske of West Fargo Sheyenne via an 8-4 decision in the semifinals before winning by fall over Ottertail Central’s William Schwartz at 48 seconds in the consolation semifinals. Fitzpatrick won by a 4-0 decision in the third-place match over Breckenridge/Wahpeton’s David Erlandson.

Israel Caldron went 4-1 and finished third place at 182 pounds. After receiving a bye in the first round Coldron won via fall over West Fargo Sheyenne’s Maddox Weigel at 2:59. William Ward won via a 5-3 decision over Caldron in the semifinals and Caldron won by a 9-4 decision over Breckenridge/Wahpeton’s Myles Hinkley in the consolation semis. Caldron finished the afternoon winning in a tie-breaker over Lisbon’s Levi Sveum 6-3.

Caleb Loehr finished 5-0 and placed first at 195 pounds. Loehr won by fall over Rodney Wolf at 1:21 of his first-round match, won by fall of Drew Anderson of Lisbon at 55 seconds of his second-round match, won by fall over Izaiah Hernandez of Grand Forks Central at 1:25 of his third-round match, won by fall over Ashton Schaff of West Fargo Sheyenne at 1:28 of his fourth round match and won by 19-4 tech fall over Kaden Manske of West Fargo Sheyenne in the championship.

James Olson went 4-0 and finished in first place at 220 pounds. After receiving a bye in the first round, Olson defeated Fargo North’s Jim Miller via fall at 41 seconds. In the semifinal, Olson won by fall over Michael Torgerson of Grand Forks Central at 1:26. In the championship, Olson won by fall over Ryder Weigel at 3:57.

Dylan Reynolds finished 0-2 at 285 pounds. Reynolds lost to Gunner Cadreau of Fargo North via fall at 2:28 in the quarterfinals and lost by a 7-3 decision to Breckenridge/Wahpeton’s Logan Schwartz in the third round of the consolation bracket.

Brookings will have its first dual of the season on Monday when they travel to West Central.
