High school wrestling: Area teams meet in Flandreau to compete

FLANDREAU – Sioux Valley, Flandreau and Deuel/Deubrook Area all competed in the Flandreau Invitational on Saturday.

Sioux Valley came in seventh as a team with 53 points. Flandreau came in eighth with 39 points. Deuel/Deubrook Area came in third with 124 points.

Sioux Valley

The Cossacks had one champion over the weekend as Skylar Trygstad took home the title in the 152-pound weight class.

Trygstad opened the tournament with a win over Deuel/Deubrook Area’s Tucker Adkins. He pinned Adkins in 3:39 to get the win. Trygstad then pinned Red Rock Central’s Quityn Vold in 1:58 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals Trygstad pinned Madison’s Tristen Dorhout in 34 seconds to advance to the title match. In the championship he pinned Luverne’s Jaden Reisch in two minutes to take home the title.

Andrew Gunderson and Wyatt Hardt also wrestled in the 152-pound weight class. Gunderson fell in his first match but then worked his way to the third-place match. Gunderson defeated Hardt with a 14-5 major decision in the second round of the consolation bracket. He then pinned Mason Marx of Elk-Point Jefferson in 1:45 in the third round of consolation and pinned Madison’s Logan Reck in 1:17 in the consolation semifinals. In the third-place match, Gunderson was defeated by Madison’s Tristen Dorhout as he was pinned in 2:06.

Owen VandeWeerd fell in the championship at heavyweight. He started the tournament with a with a pin of Madison’s Tayt Gran in 3:15 in the quarterfinals. VandeWeerd then pinned Luverne’s Masyn Akkerman in 5:30 in the semifinals. He would then get pinned by Garretson’s Jaden Richter in 15 seconds in the championship.

Tate Steffensen and Dubhlainn Vermeulen both wrestled at 120. Steffensen withdrew due to injury and Vermeulen finished in third place.

Connor Giedd of Howard won over Vermeulen with a 18-1 technical fall in the quarterfinals. Vermeulen then pinned Canistota’s Wyatt Carter in 16 seconds in the first round of the consolation bracket. He then pinned Madison’s Carter Downs in 4:03 in the consolation semifinals. In the third-place match Vermeulen pinned Deuel/Deubrook Area’s Tyson Hagberg in 1:58 to claim third place.

Lujcan Duran took fourth place at 195. He received a bye in the quarterfinals and then was pinned by Elk-Point Jefferson’s Grayson Jacobs in 45 seconds in the semifinals. He would then defeat EPJ’s Keaton Hinds in the consolation semifinals by pinning him in 2:01 before being pinned by Justin Granum of Deuel/Deubrook Area in 24 seconds in the third-place match.

Summer Guthmiller was part of a three-way tie for first in the 154-pound girls weight class. She lost a 7-4 decision to Flandreau’s Jayden Lange in her first match and then beat Luverne’s Cece Rock with an 8-5 decision in her second match.

Flandreau

The Fliers had two third place finishers on the day. Teague Bergjord took third in the 106-pound weight class. He pinned Chester Area’s Carter Leibeg in 1:51 in the quarterfinals and the lost on a 6-3 decision to Red Rock Central’s Keagan Steen in the semis. In the third-place match, Bergjord pinned Luverne’s Brody Kopp in 2:15.

Karter Headrick came in third in the 182-pound weight class. He fell to Deuel/Deubrook Area’s Dominic Constat in the quarterfinals after a 12-5 decision. He then won back-to-back matches in the consolation bracket as he pinned Howard’s Gabriel Martian in 2:35 and then pinned Luverne’s Jacob Madison in 4:05. In the third-place match he pick up another pin as he pinned Viborg-Hurley/Irene-Wakonda’s Trevor Ryan in 2:32.

Justin Klein went 2-1 in the 152-pound weight class. He pinned Viborg-Hurley/Irene-Wakonda’s Jett Kuchta in 2:40 before falling to Luverne’s Jaden Reisch in the quarterfinals as Reisch pinned him in 1:49. Klein then pinned Deuel/Deubrook Area’s Tucker Adkins in 26 seconds.

Julia Pitsenberger took first place in the 132-pound girls weight class. She pinned Garretson’s Hanna Frewaldt in 3:08 in the first round and then pinned Madison’s Isabelle Henry in 1:12 in the second round. In her final match she pinned Garretson’s Danika Juhl in 51 seconds to finish the day 3-0.

Jayden Lange was part of a three-way tie for first at 154. She was pinned by Luverne’s Cece Rock in 4:45 in her first match and then defeated Sioux Valley’s Guthmiller with a 7-4 decision in the second round.

Deuel/Deubrook Area

The Cardinals had two first place finishers over the weekend. Ryker Gauger was one of them as he came in first in the 113-pound weight class.

He received a bye in the quarterfinals and then pinned EPJ’s Bode Fennel in 1:59. In the championship match he took on Bernie Rock of Luverne and pinned him in 5:47.

Gavin Kloos won the title in the 132-pound weight class. He received a bye in the quarterfinals and then pinned Luverne’s Rayden Boyenga in 3:03 in the semifinals. Kloos then won a 3-1 decision over Madison’s Carson Wolf in the finals.

Jaxon Quail made it to the championship at 138 but lost. He worked his way to the championship by pinning Canistota’s Jack Conn in 1:49 and pinning Madison’s Chase Stuerwald in 2:40 in the semifinals. Quail then dropped a 7-6 decision to Madison’s Caleb Hoges in the championship.

Korbin Whiteley took third place at 160. Whiteley received a bye and then pinned Howard’s Jack Neises in the quarterfinals in 5:14 before being pinned by Luverne’s DJ Rock in 25 seconds in the semis. He won the third-place match via injury time as Howard’s Jack Neises was unable to compete.

Justin Granum took third at 195. Granum fell in his first match and the received a bye to the consolation semifinals. He then won a 4-3 decision over EPJ’s Noah McDermott in the consolation semifinals and pinned Sioux Valley’s Lucjan Duran in 24 seconds in the third-place match.

Tyson Hagberg took fourth at 120. He pinned Canistota’s Wyatt Carter in 57 seconds in the quarterfinals before losing a 20-3 technical fall to Howard’s Connor Giedd in the semifinals. He would then pin EPJ’s Owen Rigg in 2:57 in the consolation semifinals before getting pinned in 1:58 by Sioux Valley’s Dubhlainn Vermeulen.

CJ Fitzsimmons came in fourth at 145. He lost a 13-11 decision to Madison’s Blake Johnson in the quarterfinals before bouncing back with a pin of VHIW’s Maxx Holm in 4:31 in the consolation first round. Fitzsimmons then pinned Madison’s Braydon Gust in 2:18 in the consolation semifinals before losing a 11-3 major decision to Madison’s Blake Johnson.

Reed VanWormer came in fourth at 170. VanWormer was pinned by Madison’s Layne Hess in the quarterfinals in 1:22 and then pinned Howard’s Nolan Mentele in 38 seconds in the first round of the consolation bracket. VanWormer then pinned Sioux Valley’s Clark Mullaney in 33 seconds before getting pinned in 50 seconds by Madison’s Hess again.
