High school golf: Cossacks tie for third, Bobcats finish in ninth at State

The Sioux Valley boys’ golf team finished tied for third in Class A and Brookings finished ninth in Class AA as the South Dakota State Golf Tournaments wrapped up in Mitchell and Aberdeen on Tuesday afternoon.

Class A

MITCHELL – Sioux Valley finished the Class A tournament at the Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen tied with Dakota Valley for third place. The Cossacks shot a second-round 319 for a two-day total of 645 (+69).

Tate Steffensen led the way for the Cossacks on Tuesday shooting a 78 (+6) for a tournament total of  156 (+12). The score tied for 14th place along with Elk Point-Jefferson’s Carter Langle and Dakota Valley’s Logan Collette and Dylan Lukken.

Kyan Overbo shot 79 (+7) for the second straight day to finish with a tournament total of 158 (+14). He finished tied for 19th along with Beresford’s Dustin Maas, Canton’s Carson Steffensen and Aberdeen Roncalli’s Sawyer Henrich.

Kyle Bezdischek shot a final round 76 (+4) to improve his total to 159 (+15) and finish in 23rd place while Jameson Degen shot an 84 (+12) on Tuesday to finish in 43rd place with a two-day total of 172 (+28).

Maverick Nelson also improved on Tuesday, shooting a final-round 85 to finish with a two-day total of 175 (+31) and finished tied with Beresford’s Kaden Anderson and Madison’s Jack Olson for 49th place.

Flandreau was represented on the final day by Alfie Henderson, who shot a 77 to finish with a total score of 165. He finished in 31st for the tournament along with Aberdeen’s Lucas Daggett.

Kaden Burshiem also shot a second-day 86 for the Fliers, giving him a two-day total of 170 and finishing in 41st place along with Winner Area’s Landon Calhoon.

Vermillion took home the team title in Class A, shooting a 310 on the second day for a team total of 614 (+38). Aberdeen Roncalli came in second place after shooting 318 on Tuesday for a team total of 638 (+62). Dakota Valley and Sioux Valley finished tied for third while West Central finished in fifth place with a second day total of 317 and a team total of 646.

Tea Area’s Keeton Newborg took home the Class A individual title, using a second-round 71 (-1) for a two-day total of 145 (+1). Newborg won the title by three strokes over West Central’s Trey Even and Chamberlain’s Dakota Munger, who each posted a tournament total of 148. Even shot a 71 on Tuesday while Munger shot a 74 (+2).

Vermillion’s Trey Hansen shot a 75 on Tuesday for a tournament total of 149 and Sioux Falls Christian teammates Eli Anema and Kaleb Jost tied for fifth place with a total score of 150.

Class AA

ABERDEEN – The Bobcats finished ninth at the end of the two-day tournament at the Lakeview Municipal Golf Course in Mitchell, compiling a team score of 333 (+35). Brookings was led by Austin Clark, who shot a final round 77 (+5). Clark tied with Jackson Swartz of RC Stevens and Aberdeen Central’s Peyton Brust for 23rd place for the tournament with a two-day total of 157 (+13).

Tyson Lunn also improved on the second day of the tournament, shooting a 78 after an opening-round 87. Lunn’s two-day total was 165 (+21), which tied with SF Jefferson’s Andrew Noble and RC Central’s Benjamin Gibson for 44th place.

Egan Jensen shot an 83 on Tuesday and finished tied 65th in the tournament along with Adam Knigge of Sioux Falls Lincoln with a two-day total of 171 (+27), Cale Jones shot an 85 on Tuesday and finished tied for 68th place with a two-day total of 173 (+29) and Jase Bauer finished in 78th place after shooting 85 on Tuesday and finishing the tournament with a score of 178 (+34).

Harrisburg took home the team title at this year’s tournament, shooting 286 on the first day and 301 on the second day for a tournament total of 587 (+11). Pierre came in second with a team total of 595 (+19) and Watertown was one stroke behind, finishing third with a score of 596. O’Gorman (599, +23) and Mitchell (624, +48) rounded out the top five.

Harrisburg’s Riley Christensen won the individual state title, shooting a second-round 72 (E) for a two-day total of 140 (-4). Watertown’s Jake Olson finished in second after a second-round 68 (-4) and a tournament total of 145 (+1) and Radley Mauney finished in third with a second-round 70 (-2) and a two-day total of 146 (+2). Harrisburg’s Hayden Scott (77, +5), Pierre’s Nicklaus Bothun (77, +5) and O’Gorman’s Mac Drake (73, +1) finished in a three-way tie for third place.
