BROOKINGS – Firefighters surround Darrell Hartmann at his retirement recognition Tuesday during the Brookings City Council meeting at the City & County Government Center. Hartmann was fire chief in Brookings.

City Manager Paul Briseno announced there would be an open house reception from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at the City & County Government Center first floor lobby to honor retirees Hartmann, City Engineer Jackie Lanning, and Dale Allgood, a Street Division superintendent mechanic.

“Darrell provided 23 years of service to our community,” Briseno said. “When I say community of Brookings, it’s really the greater area of Brookings because of all the different relationships we have across the state, and more importantly our region.”

“As the chief, he led our fire department, but more importantly, he developed the professional firefighters we have today, many of which are here tonight, and I appreciate you coming to support Darrell,” Briseno said.

“He was always a student of the profession,” Briseno said. “Always learning about the intricacies and the evolution of fire, safety and firefighting, fire suppression and education, as well.”

Hartmann not only taught the firefighters, but shared his knowledge with all, Briseno said.

“Darrell’s leadership meant that he always led from the front,” Briseno said. “He often stood in the face of danger with his firefighters. And one comment that I heard from an individual was that his knowledge was vast, and he understood that volunteerism is a calling and not a job.”

“His leadership was founded in integrity, devotion and service to others, and for that and for years of service, Darrell, we thank you for your commitment to this community,” Briseno said as he presented Hartmann with a certificate of appreciation.
